I realize it could just be me, but I enjoy the look of non-matching furniture in a bedroom, so many of the total suites I've seen remind me of hotel rooms. I'd much rather see things you've accumulated, love, blended, and as long as they speak to each other in some way, or speak to you. Years ago when I needed bedroom furniture all at once I bought a 4-poster bed and nightstands (not identical nightstands/lamp tables, one in one style and the second in another) in whitewashed pine, then two bachelor chests with mirrors and a highboy in natural pine. I'm using those in our new master now and have added a small dark Drexel lamp table with a bit of hand painting on the front. It used to be in my former living room and I loved it, scale was too small for this house living area and now I'm enjoying it in my bedroom with my pine.

I was confused about your bedding; I think it looks fine in your photoshopped pic! I thought you were using the patterned fabric as a comforter too; the cream comforter instead seems to balance the black better. I included the 60-30-10 link for you to figure out your colors---you've got gray, blue, cream, black... (or is that gray really more blue?). That link will help you figure out what to paint black and what to paint cream. If you're using your cream as the "10%", then her cream comforter is probably all you need in that room and painting any furniture "cream" would offset the percentages. As far as the size of your room and the amount/size/finishes of furniture---I don't think that's an issue. I've read a designer's book that purposely uses large furniture in a small room so the focus is on the furniture itself instead of realizing how tiny the room is. I would think you would be employing the same "trick". Another trick that I read to increase the size of the room is your furniture placement. When entering the room, if the eye can unobstructedly see the furthest angle/corner of the room, it will appear larger. I think Ttodd's personal rooms are inspiring. Similar to your daughter's inspiration photo, Ttodd's LR makes use of neutral textures, like the basket weaves. Your daughter has great taste and so refined!

Thanks Franksmom! I'm hoping that the wall color won't be too dark for her tree mural. I don't want to go too dark on the leaves. That bureau looks totally different from when I bought it for $10 or $15 7yrs ago. It was burnt orange w/ big wooden knobs. I bought new glass knobs and glued on the 2 wooden decals. DH found small wheels at his shop and put those on for me to raise the height to a more comfortable changing table height for us. Jerseygirl - well you know the adult rocker needs to have the seat reupholstered and I've been going back and forth between cream or blue. Maybe a print w/ both colors? Her curtains are a natural muslin color w/ pom pom trim and her bedding is almost he same color as the wall w/ a brown toile print and a cream matelasse quilt. Soft pink sheets. Bumblebeez - that is an excellent point about focal points and I didn't want to take away from the bureau by adding too many painted pieces.

I don't see why not. Or more accurately I am finishing up my living room with the help of a designer and after much deliberation selected two occasional chairs in blue leather to complement my sofa and vintage carved wood armchair. I selected leather deliberately because I needed a *fabric* that would work with the existing upholstered sofar and chair. My sofa is a solid blue mohair velvet and the chair is a pattern with complementary blue tones. Solid fabric wouldn't work and neither would pattern. The leather I chose is perfect because the leather doesn't "clash" with the existing sold sofa and the specific shade of blue works because it picks up the lighter gradations of blue in the sofa when the light hits it. Leather comes in so many different colors. It is only in showrooms that choices are brown, black, cream and the occasional *wild* navy blue. Even the particular softer blue I wanted had four different subtle variations. I was able to lay them all out on the sofa and pick the one that worked best with the sofa.
