Comments (5)It's hard for me to say how much love was involved. Joe (the bookbinder) had learned his trade at the age of 14. Even then most bookbinding was automated but he apprenticed as a sample maker, making books by hand for customer approval because it wasn't worth configuring all the machinery to make just a couple of copies. A few years later he was taken prisoner by the Nazis and used for slave labor running telegraph lines along railroads. He escaped when the guards abandoned the boxcar of workers he was in during an allied bombing raid, crossed the front on foot, fell asleep under a tree and woke with an English rifle in his face. After it was determined he wasn't a spy he was tricked into signing enlistment papers (in English, which he didn't speak at the time) and his unintended military career continued, first in the British army and later the Dutch, all the way through Korea. It took him that long to get back to bindery work. When I met him he generally struck me as tired and resolute. His story about repairing the bible was about what it's like to do work whose value isn't understood. I'd say bookbinding was just his civillian trade, the peaceful, sane thing he knew how to do....See MoreWhat is too much in painted furniture?
Comments (29)I need help in this area, please I will send pics! I have been handed down some furniture that is old and have a few pieces from my ex husband that just aren't my taste. I hate my black leather couches, but this is what I'm working with. I want to lighten up the room! I want to keep my coffee table dark bc it's in great shape. The tv stand is being replaced with a black wood entertainment table this afternoon. I was initially thinking, pain corner hutch a cream and distress and maybe do the tv stand and dining room table chairs the same? My walls are the lightest sage you could imagine...people don't know they're "green". I do have a fun POP of color by my front door and wondered if I could use that very subtle sage as the top of my tv stand and/or dining room table to tie that piece in? I'm a newbie. Have painted plenty of furniture, but now just have so much to imagine and I'm terrible at that! Tv stand will be the Walmart photo I posted. Used. Tried to show all my pieces and the wall color against the white ceiling. Help please!!!!...See MoreHow much continuity in your furniture styles from room to room?
Comments (11)I also like the look of the second stools best, but as others have said, not sure if I would put them up against the cherry. Love your cabinets, love your soapstone BTW! Regarding the upholstered stools, I know I would be afraid of kids + fabric but I might also be on the overcautious end of things. In our house there is not much continuity of furniture style from one room to the next in terms of everything being MCM or farmhouse or French country, because none of the rooms are any one particular style. Every room has a blend of thrift-store finds, family antiques, Crate and Barrel/IKEA, etc. I would not recommend my house as a model for anyone else's, other than to say when I am in a house that is all primitives or all Victorian or all French country or whatever, it often feels to me like I'm on a stage set rather than in a personal home. I lack the discipline and love too many different things to pull it off myself....See Morefurniture staining to match other furniture - mentally stuck
