Design Dilemma Storage & Closet

Closet Organization

Our house was built in 1983. Our son's room has two closets that dont quite qualify as a reach in, nor do they qualify as a walk in. I need organization options.. I need drawers and tiered hanging options that will fit toddler clothing. I like the wire solutions best so that I can adjust the height as my kiddo's grow. Most of the closet planners have been useless. HELP!

That's a nice sized closet, you can do a lot with it! Have you looked at the Container Store? They have great closet systems. If you think all the closet planners are useless I think you should design it yourself. Good luck and I hope you get everything you wish for, hope you are enjoying the holidays!

If you widen the opening, I think you could make better use of the space.

And put some serious storage on the back of the door for the stuff you use all the time (whether it's pantry stuff or cleaning stuff, or perhaps both, depending on what will fit). For mops and brooms, to keep them from flopping on the door when you open it, use the new Command broom holders and put one at the bottom too--I did that w/ my back-of-the-door Swiffer, and it was BRILLIANT (if I do say so myself). There are other options for pantry type things, but I'd vote to stay away from things like shoe pockets or even those Elfa baskets, and go for something deeper and sturdier. More like this: (In fact, look at that--is has a pull-out unit at the bottom--I bet that's an option for you!)

Need help with closet organization layout

I was messing around in Sketchup can came up with this layout using hanging towers. The middle rod would hold dresses and unused dressy clothing for both of us. I'd skip putting in the bottom rods to see how it works with just the top first. If the bottom rods aren't needed, then the laundry basket and perhaps a shoe system would go there. The towers have adjustable shelves using pegs. Top shelf would be 12in from ceiling, and with a 72" hanging tower, that would give about 12" off the floor. Currently we just keep a carry on bag on our top shelf. Thoughts?

My favorite, most inviting closet i ever lived with was less a closet and more a dressing room. The bathroom opened off the space. The clothes were behind large sliding doors. A tall chest held accessories. A skylight lit the space, but because the clothes were behind doors the light didn’t fade the fabrics,p. I‘ve never liked my walk-in closets where I am confronted with all my, or all my and my husband’s, clothes at once. In that closet, I liked that it was serene, and I could open the door for the current season, the other clothes were behind another door. Formal/party wear behind another door.

FYI this is a pefecr reach in closet that is in many bedrooms, a closet needs to be deep enough to hold hangers which means 24” and best at 26” If you want to plan this space draw it to scale and figure out what you want to store now and in the future. Boys need very little actual hanging space so lots of drawers and some hanging space above for shirts, pants I think drawers will be a problem with the wall in the front so maybe open up that opening so that drwaers can function in the closet

Hi Robyn,

For a closet system that could grow with your son, I would suggest a 10-12" section of long hang on the back wall against the left side, then a section of double hang approx 30" wide.

On the right wall I would have a wall to wall section of 14" deep adjustable shelving that you could add/remove shelving as your son grew. I would suggest leaving enough space under the shelving that you could fit a hamper basket.

I would not recommend drawers for this closet as they would require enough room that it would reduce space for other storage solutions.
