Hi, I was wondering what others have found helpful in making their closets appear not just organized, but actually inviting.

A truly organized closet to me is inviting because of that. Good lighting is always a must.

I have artwork hanging in my master closet where there is a bare expanse of wall. I have also added an antique dresser, which provides extra storage and breaks up the built-in shelving look. Oh, and I have a pretty slipper chair in the space for seating while putting on shoes. My closet isn't huge by any means, but there are still simple ways to make any walk-in more attractive.

I agree, you need more shelves in those spaces where the shoes are not. So that you DO have space for shoes--look at all the air above them! You want those shelves narrowly spaced so they're almost perfectly sized cubbies. (MiMi's pics show you a good setup--nice job, MiMi!). You also need to have some discipline, so you actually PUT those shoes on those shelves (I see lots of blank space on those shelves; clearly nobody's using them). And there are empty hangers--but clothes piled behind them. So, that's because of a combination of a system you don't believe in or find hard to use, AND a lack of discipline. (First, those are crappy hangers; get ones that don't bend. I'm a fan of chrome) The other set of shelves is in an annoying position, since you have to reach around the dresser to get to it--that's not working. Can you move that dresser over? (No need to center things)

Do you want to store the coats hangers or on hooks? Will the coat storage be out-of-season stuff, or accessed every day? Will the shoe storage be daily shoes, or the sports/winter footwear? Shelves on the left. Some bins on them for storage of loose items. A hook system (like pegboard or something more modern) on the right can hold bats, rackets, hockey sticks, and more.

I’d define needs, ie: hanging, shelving, drawers, long racks, shoe storage, etc. It‘s also a perfect time to reasses your things and edit if necessary. Use baskets for small items if not adding drawers. Look on line for narrow closet ideas and head to Ikea with dimensions and requirements. If properly organized, I don't think door will be an issue (bare wall would be on the right), but you could always add curtains or narrow doors that pull out.

Hi Lisa! There are a few things you can do instead of spending the time and money to re-do the entire space. First, declutter. Anything that does not need to be in that space... (like Spiderman masks, cans of food, and a seat from a car) should be moved to a different area in the home. Only keep items you are using for that particular season in the entryway space. Second, paint goes a long way for making a space look lighter and brighter quickly and affordably. Paint the brown furniture, cubbies and shelving units white to help brighten the space when you walk in. Last, if you know someone handy, you could ask them to add doors to the shelving units. This allows you to hide your mess without having to actually change how you store it. And closing those closets off will help your eyes see a nice white piece of furniture instead of a mess every time you walk into the space. Making it more relaxing. Hope this helps!

My favorite, most inviting closet i ever lived with was less a closet and more a dressing room. The bathroom opened off the space. The clothes were behind large sliding doors. A tall chest held accessories. A skylight lit the space, but because the clothes were behind doors the light didn’t fade the fabrics,p.

I‘ve never liked my walk-in closets where I am confronted with all my, or all my and my husband’s, clothes at once. In that closet, I liked that it was serene, and I could open the door for the current season, the other clothes were behind another door. Formal/party wear behind another door.

Go through Pinterest and pick the first 10-20 closets that appeal to you. Then analyze what they have in common.

At a glance, I bet these are the things that'll jump out at you:

- The nicest closets aren't overly crowded, so put some effort into culling things you don't wear on a regular basis.

- They have matching hangers.

- Everything's neat.

- As an afterthought, consider some color or artwork ... maybe in the form of a rug or matching baskets.
