I have never, ever been able to maintain a system of labeling stuff on the hanger. Can you do something so that you can "flip" through the clothes on the rod? How much "air" is there on your closet rod? I would vote for hanging them over the hanger w/ both ends exactly even, and then you can see about how long they are just by looking at them. (If they're likely to slip off because of the weight of the waistband on one side, put a clothespin on them to hold them.) If you hang all those pants together, then the shorter ones will be, well, shorter when you look at them on the rod. However, I *was* successful in dealing with the extra hangers. Like you, I hate having the empties on the rod; they get in the way, and then when you want to get them to use for hanging up the laundry, you end up leaving some behind. Here's my solution: I got one of these: And mounted it on the inside of the door frame, up above head height. Like this! Now, when I take clothes off the hanger, I move the hanger to the holder. This has been working for me for a long time now--2 years, maybe. I had it in my head as a solution for a long time, and when we had to do construction work on the back wall of my closet, I grabbed the opportunity. (the Hanga Danga holder wouldn't work for me, bcs not all of my hangers are the same shape, and skirt hangers wouldn't fit over it. And the biggie: I do *NOT* have floor space.) Check out under-the-bed storage for your shoes -- keep shoe smells away from your clothes. If you are interested in a DIY project: There are a lot of older (analog) tv cabinets in used furniture stores, thrift stores, Habitat for Humanity Restore Stores and some of them are quality pieces of furniture with doors that, by replacing the plywood on the back (where holes for wiring are usually located) and adding a couple of shelves could be made into an excellent cabinet for storing folded clothes. While reading through Houzz, I saw several posts that said corner pantries are no good. Why? A badly thought out pantry size and location is why. Many are afterthoughts by the builder or kitchen designer, stuck in to have the checkbox "pantry" marked off, that interrupt traffic flow or have lousy shelving arrangements. Where do you keep your Christmas decorations? Ideally, where they will be out of the way, safe from moisture and vermin and with respect to their being accessed only once a year. One dedicated spot that is not in the way of things you use frequently. My mom had a shelf all the way around above door level in their walk-in closet that had all the Christmas stuff. Does anyone actually use a window seat? Or are they there to just look pretty? If I had one, I would make it wide enough to loll on whilst reading books and watching the birds outside. Most of them are merely butt-perches .

I think you're giving the taper too much power. If something needs to be in a bin, that bin doesn't need to exactly fill up the whole shelf. Lots of stuff may not need to go in bins or baskets anyway. You could get 12"-deep boxes and put them on the deeper side, and leave the rest of the shelf for setting things that don't go in bins or boxes. Or, if you do need a bin that exactly fills the shelf, can't you use your plethora of woodworking tools to make your own in a trapezoidal shape? It's just an oddly shaped wooden drawer, which is itself a lidless wooden box. (I made a storage box/bin for an oddly shaped space by cutting up foam-core board and hot-gluing it together. Now and then I have to reinforce it, but it works great! I'm too lazy to make it out of wood, and I don't have a lot of experience using thinner wood like 1/4" luan or masonite, and 3/4" stock would be too heavy) You could install shelves, or you could make "pockets" to hang on the wall based on what's going to go in them (if you make your own pockets, you can make them as fat as you need for whatever you're going to put in them). I'd say: First, figure out how to put a single hanging rod on the 24"-deep side (and limit how many coats can go in there--everybody in the family gets two hangers, and any other outerwear goes in the bedroom). Or, put in one hanging rod (those Closet-Maid/Elfa wire shelves?) for long coats, and install second one halfway down the wall to convert one half of that space for jackets? My experience is that especially in winter, there are more hip-length coats than short jackets, so plan for winter, not spring or fall. Then see what sorts of other storage needs you can fulfill there--would the vacuum bit on the coats side? Can you put pockets on the side wall for gloves, hooks for umbrellas and dog leashes? Can you put a tray or basket on the floor to hold boots or shoes? Or something on the shelf above the hanging rod that would be useful for what you store there? Then stand in front of that tapered side with all the stuff you're going to put in there, and see what inspires you. Do you want shelves you can put boxes on? (You could make a small trapezoidal bookcase and bolt it to the wall, leaving space below it; or use brackets on the back wall to install tapered shelves--you can buy brackets of varying lengths.) Would pockets or baskets on the side wall be useful for stuff like cleaning supplies or shoes? Would hooks allow you to use the most shallow section for hanging the vacuum hose?
