Comments (13)If you continue to hire people in the hardwood flooring business who have not kept pace with emerging technology in finishes...well, you will have many of the drying and 'softness' issues of the finish films that you are experiencing with your floors. As for poor sanding jobs and the overall lack of good workmanship...well, you can find that in any business that is subject to 'cutthroat' competition. For the best hardwood flooring job (either installation or restoration) you need to hire an independent contractor who actually performs the work or closely supervises it. He or she lives or dies in the business by the quality of the work, so the work quality usually is of high caliber. Going with a company that sends a salesperson to you to 'sell' the job and then sends a 'sub' or a 'jobber' to do the work,...well that, in my opinion is not the best way to go. Perhaps there are companies that work that way and get excellent results, but I haven't seen it. Flooring work is a skilled 'trade' or 'craft' and there are good tradespeople and good craftspeople in the business. Your job as consumers is to find them, insist on quality materials and then pay them what the work is worth!...See MoreHELP! White painted cabinets ruined by painter!
Comments (36)Unfortunately we have already closed on the house. We closed on the 30th of September. The seller's had already given the restoration the insurance check. I think that because they had already moved they didn't really care too much about what was going on with the house. They didn't ever really get involved. Before, we closed the restoration company wasn't quite finished with everything but claimed that they would finish and it would be perfect and up to our standards. At that time we had them sign paperwork stating that they would finish up/ fix the work on the wood floors and cabinets. A new crew of wood floor guys came in today and were astonished at the condition of the wood floors. They are supposed to be coming back on Monday to repair the floors. They said the only thing that they could really do was replace the trim pieces and cut out the pieces that were buckling and inject them with glue. As for the spaces and scratches they said that they can repair that with wood putty and stain. Thoughts? The contractor right below the general contractor is supposed to come by today to re-assess the damage and see what can be done. Although they already did this last week before the touch up crew came in this week and it is basically in the same condition. The only thing they did was lightly sand and re-paint the cabinets. Based on your responses the whole cabinets need to be replaced. What should I tell the GC? He hasn't even came to walk the place himself, I guess I should send him a link to the photos as well? They claim I am being too picky and that I am wrong in expecting perfection from a raw product (wood). Maybe I should contact the insurance company as well?...See MorePaint Job on Custom Kitchen Cabinets vs. Semi-Custom Cabinets?
Comments (6)We used cliqstudios cabinets in 3 projects in our last house. 2 were stained wood, 1 was the painted wood (linen). The painted cabinets withstood 2 children coloring on them with non washable crayons, colored pencil, 3 cats who loved to rub their faces on the corners and a very VERY busy work area. After pricing the cliqstudios cabinets, the same kitchen in IKEA, and KountryWood Products (available through a local dealer), we've decided to go with cliqstudios again. The prices were exactly the same, IKEA doesn't come with plywood sides, they were only available as an upgrade on the KWP's and they come standard on the cliqstudios cabinets. Plus, I don't have to build the cliqstudios cabinets. As for the finished - my parents went with a VERY high end custom cabinetry company (apologies, I don't remember the name) - white painted inset shaker style - the finish on their cabinets started looking like crap within 5 years. Places where the cabinet finish has chipped, or flaked off, discoloration, etc....See MoreChristopher Nelson Wallcovering and Painting
