Tomato Question
Comments (9)Jay, They do give you more sun protection and, living here in OK, I really appreciate that. Sprawlers totally don't work for me because of our clay soil's propensity to hold water, etc. but I can see why they work for you. It also depends on the year. I'll have one set of tomato issues in a year with 18 or 20 or 22 inches of rain and completely different issues in a year with 40 or 42 or 49 (!) inches of rain. The problem is that when I compile my 'grow list' in the fall/winter and start seeds in mid-winter, I have no idea if we're going to have a year with 22" of rain or 42" of rain. I wish I had a crystal ball.... The only hybrid tomatoes I've grown that were delibaerately bred PL are the Husky Line, and I've Grown Husky Red, Husky Gold, Husky Pink, Husky Red Cherry and Husky Gold Cherry. The plants had absolutely no foliar disease in a year when my other plants had moderate foliar disease. They produced a lot of tomatoes, especially Husky Red and Husky Red Cherry. However, the 'maters weren't even worth eating...their skin was tough and they really didn't have much flavor. So, to me the disease resistance was nice but really not worth anything in the end because the tomatoes weren't worth eating. Maybe that's why the PLs aren't used more in breeding---because good foliar coverage and disease resistance doesn't matter to us tomato addicts as much as great flavor and texture! I don't care for the wispy-leaved ones either. Here in my garden, the fruit sunscalds something fierce, so I avoid those nowadays. For anyone who doesn't understand why we grow 40 or 50 varieties of tomatoes a year, this thread illustrates why....it is so hard to find varieties that perform well here and so we increase our odds of getting a good crop by growing a little of this and a little of that! I'm still looking for the perfect tomato that is the 'perfect' combination of disease-resistance, high production and incredible flavor, but I am not sure such a variety exists. Comments (7)I don't believe that 'fashion' should rule one's life - if you look good and are comfortable, then I say 'WEAR IT'! I haven't seen women wear white dress shoes nor carry white purses in years. There was a show on this past week that addressed this issue. It was stated that back in the 1920's era, rich people wore white as an identifier, when they went to spend their winter months in a warmer climate. Pshaaaw - we wear swimsuits, beach coverups and sandals 10 months out of the year down here in Florida. Fashion doesn't exist down here, for the most part - nearly everyone dresses for comfort, whether going to church or to Walmart. Even the rich old retired folks wear sports wear year around. They get their hair dyed blue or pink, get it coiffured, their fake nails done, put on their makeup and funny hats and off they go! Comfort is the name of the game, imho! If you have a weather-suitable white outfit and want to wear it, GO FOR IT! No one is going to care....See MoreGlenda's Pineapple Casserole - 2 questions!
Comments (3)Put it all together the nite before. I always do that, EXCEPT FOR THE CRACKERS AND BUTTER. Refrigerate. I do mix the crackers and butter together and put in a plastic bag. And refrig them, as well. Take everything out that morning, set on counter for a while, then bake. So everything will get heated all the way thru. Then top with the crackers right before putting in oven. My DS has been caught eating leftovers cold, standing at the refrigerator door. But for meals, I serve warm. Comments (16)ravencajun, haven't you previously said you most often use tablets? I encounter more website problems on all kinds of sites with tablets (and we have both Android and iPad varities), and more consistently and frequently so, than I ever do with a PC. Maybe there is site-producing software that's more android/IOS friendly, and some that is less so? Or more Firefox friendly and less so for others? I know for my employer's website, you can't use Chrome. Don't even think of it. I've asked and they just suggest using anything other than Chrome. A few years ago, before they restructured (and re-coded?) the site, Chrome worked great but you couldn't use Firefox. Now, they've switched, Firefox works fine....See More- 6 years ago
