I could scream. Should I give up?
Comments (45)The old adage "if you want something done right, do it yourself" rings very true here. I like the yellow stakes idea. Even if the mow/blow guys can't read, surely they know their colors - do not touch!!! The yard man who does the landscape care where I work clips the formosa azaleas like hedges - even after August when they have set their buds for next spring. I told my boss but he still does it, and there were no flowers this year. Duh! You grow up in Florida and don't know azaleas aren't hedges??? I've had my neighbor's "20-year old handyman/gardener" spray RU in the wind (my whole front yard of roses was downwind) and say "my uncle says it only kills grass". There's no cure for stupid. The builder of our subdivision (34 lots) did not want an HOA but after erecting a nice entrance sign for the subd name was told by the city that doing so required him to have an association (?!?!). So he went the minimally invasive route of a POA - Property Owners Association. In Florida anyway a POA may or may not apply even the few rules they have which are only meant to protect property values NOT dictate house color, yard plantings, etc. Our rules do say we must have grass in the front yard, but the board has not enforced that against me. :)) Invariably, there are errors in communication - especially between men and women (I won't say more, but I don't understand what's so hard about LISTENING). Funny thing - my bosses DH is a very verbal, non-mechanical, lawyer-educated but non practicing man who repeats EVERYTHING he says at least twice. At first I found it kind of aggravating, but then I came to appreciate the second chance to "get" his instructions and now wish everyone would "tell me twice". I'm more and more grateful for the toughness of OGRs. I hope hoovb's HOA Mons Tillier is on its way to recovery, and I hope luxrosa's 12" tall teas survived. I will be hugely impressed if they do. Comments (19)I found the tax shelter in this posting when searching for a gift for my brother. He is a tax preparer and has everything. So I just had to share what I did for him. I took one of those woodcraft houses from Walmart- removed the two screws from the base. I cut a 1" block of wood that fit into the bottom of the house. I glued this block onto the base thus allowing the top of the house to be easily lifted off the base. I cut a 1/2" groove in the center of the block with the table saw so I could set a card of thumb tacks into it. This was hidden in the house until the top was lifted off. I wrote a poem for this & read it to him while my daughter did a Vanna White presentation of the house. Everyone got a good laugh out of this and I finally did a complete craft project! It's been a while. Hope you have as much fun with this as we did. Here's the poem: I drew your name for Christmas It's an honor, don't you know To get my brothers name for Christmas Ah! ashopping I will go. But then I started frettin After searching high and low Whatever will I get 'im (Twas wrong to worry so!) I went into an office shop Maybe something for your desk? I talked to the clerk a lot She tried to aid me in my quest. He could use a tax shelter Is what the lady said It seemed a bit off-kelter But there was nothing left instead. So here's your little shelter All painted so very nice The foundation has been mended The roofs' been polished thrice. The flowers are all blooming In the big pot by the door The bumblebees are buzzing And there's no sawdust on the floor. It seems to be the perfect place I do agree she's right It sure beats a plain old case And your tacks! They're finally safe at night!...See MoreKitchen stuff you NEVER use
Comments (77)How about a swap thread (a thread that we make an effort to keep on page 1)? People write to the thread saying what they need to borrow. Someone who has the desired item sends it out, and then the borrower sends it back when finished. I guess the particulars could get worked out over email, but if you don't know who has what, you write to the swap thread to find out? For example, I don't need it now ('cause DS's 4-year b-day has just passed, not to mention we are moving and I don't want one more thing in my house right now), but that Ninja Turtle cake pan that somebody has could have come in handy...and may come in handy next year! But I'd never go out and buy one. That's just one example. Why not reuse and recycle, instead of going out to purchase a gadget you'd use once or twice? Just a thought. -mando...See MoreContractors: How do you feel about referral bonuses/gifts?
Comments (35)Kirkhall-- you say you won't believe pics, and I agree-- no one's going to show pics of their failures. The thing is, the same can be said of referrals. You want a good indictor? Ask him if he'll give you a referral of someone where he had difficulties, not expecting him to do it, but to see what his reaction is. If he tells you he's never had a problem. be afraid. Be VERY afraid. I was even just talking about this with a bunch of other contractors on Facebook-- any contractor in ANY trade who says he's never had a problem or failure on a jobsite, has either not been in the trade very long, or is a blatant liar. Either way, not someone you want to hire. the difference between a quality contractor and a fly by night is how they handle it. If they try and put it off on everyone else, and refuse to fix the problem, that's a fly by night. If, however, they do their best to find the root cause, and fix the problem, that's you're quality contractor. As for me-- mine was actually very public several years ago, and even in both this forum and John Bridge's site. We even had TCNA board members in on it trying to figure out what happened. One way or the other, I ended up redoing the problem on my own dime, and changing up on a couple of things-- one thing that I'd done, and one that the homeowner had done, and the problem didn't present itself again.
