Carpet goes under baseboard and trim?
Yeah I realize I post a lot here but we're coming down to the end of The Wire and I feel like we're slapping stuff together for the house we're building. I have an inspector coming out on Monday to look at a lot of the major things and things that should be up to code but one of the questions I have is the carpet and whether or not it goes under the baseboard and trim which is what I always thought it would do. If you look at the picture there are some pieces of trim that go all the way to the floor because I've had to replace it or pull it off and replace it which would mean the carpet would go under the baseboards and some of the trim but then butt up against other trim which I feel like is not the correct way to do it.

Comments (7)I was wondering if it might be related to expansion. I noticed it in winter but not earlier (I was also sitting on the floor recently, however!). My floor is engineered wood (less expansion issues) and I don't know that flooring gains height with humidity. I have only heard of leaving expansion gaps along the edges when the floor is installed because it needs room to move side to side. So your builder is allowing for height expansion of your floor during the summer months? Is that what he was saying? How would you see the gap more if they did not raise the shoe off the floor? I have been lied to so many times before as if I were an ignorant homeowner/woman that wouldn't know any better (had already researched things) that I don't really believe much anymore until I've checked it out for myself. I'm looking at other people's flooring and the shoe is sitting flush during winter, not floating above it, lol. I do not like it either. Comments (14)Those pegged wood floors have great character and that LR has so much potential. I can't wait to see the transformation so I hope you share pics of the progress. The bedrooms look a little small so I could see how wood flooring could help to make them feel more interesting and spacious. That last photo in particular really shows that dark trim you were talking about and, if it were me, I'd have a really hard time not ripping that out and replacing it with something nicer in white. Comments (12)I do it all wrong. I HATE quarter round. So I install my 1* before carpet. But I install it after wood. So the wood goes almost to the wall....then the 1* goes above it. The 1* is suppose to go in first at the floor so it is the same level as rooms with carpet. All my carpeted rooms have a door, so it isn't a visual issue. If you do it my way, you would have a harder time installing the 1* before as you want it to go down to the top of the wood flooring....See MoreDoor jams and trim installed first or carpet first?
Comments (9)Thanks. Well, that is what I thought. I should have said we were not ready to buy "additional flooring". We reused the old carpet, and there is no way to match it. We have built 3 or 4 homes, and carpet was always last. However, I think I DO need to tell him what kind of flooring I will be using, right? If I put a laminate floor plank or vinyl floor plank on the floor, will the baseboard trim be installed lower than it would be with carpet? Or does it not matter? Another question... In a bedroom doorway, where should the carpet end? Inside the bedroom, outside the bedroom, or halfway in between (in the center of the door jamb)? Will the closed bedroom door cover the carpet? It looks like he planned to use an iron to attach the new carpet to the old carpet, maybe? The two different carpets will not match at all, which is why I told him I was not ready. So, will he have to iron on a small strip of old carpet? (A couple of inches wide?) Doesn't the edge need to be attached to a carpet tack strip and turned under? Or does it get finished differently with plank flooring? I doubt I will find carpet to match so I am leaning toward vinyl planks. Thanks....See More

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoWhat kind of carpet? So far, the assumption is carpet with a separate pad throughout, which gets stretched onto a tack strip. The finish carpenters often leave the door jambs and casing to go all the way to the floor because the carpet on one side of the door may be higher than the vinyl floor on the other.
Tack strip does not go under the trim. It goes about 1/2" out so that the carpet can be tucked under the trim after stretching. The flooring installers SHOULD cut the door jambs up to the proper height to get whatever type of flooring underneath it. Carpet edges can unravel if not tucked under the trim. The general rule is that the only place flooring does not go under trim is on the stairway, but I suppose there could be some regional laziness. The problem is that around the door jambs and casing is the hardest place to cut flooring exactly to get it to fit nicely without having the extra leeway of what gets tucked under. If you judge the cut 1/4" short while the flooring is rolled up the wall, it would still go under the trim 1/4", but if you were trying to fit the flooring exactly to the face of the trim, and were 1/4" short, you end up with a hole or gap.
