Door jams and trim installed first or carpet first?

My contractor wants to install the door jambs and baseboard trim after the carpet is installed. He said that is the way it is done. If that was true, no one would get new carpet because the baseboards and door jambs are already installed. I had not planned on buying carpet yet, but he is pushing me to buy carpet so he can install it. It is not part of the bid I agreed on. I don't want rushed to buy carpet when I am not ready. I have not even looked at carpet and he wanted it delivered by Monday morning. I told him that I am not ready to buy carpet. So, am I right that he can install the door jambs and baseboard trim now? Thanks.
