Comments (20)I done renovation work in some homes where pets had soiled the carpet. Professional carpet cleaning should help. If the underboards are badly soaked they will have to be treated after the carpets are pulled up. Bleach and water applied with a paint roller works wonders! If cleaning the carpet fails have a look at carpet remnants. While it won't be the perfect kind and color it will be new and clean. If you are careful not to slice off a finger (my dad's advice to me once) it can be cut with a utility knife and simply laid in place. Again not the best installation but fairly inexpensive and much better then living with stinky carpet. Part of the joy of being a homeowner is fixing things. Just becareful as you could become one of the glassy-eyed masses wandering around Home Depot dreaming of the next six things you can do to the homestead. Dolly dog whizzed on my carpet and I noticed it was much worse then any kitty accident. I had to buy my own carpet cleaning machine with special pet odor soap... which has been handy as I stupidly dribble coffee on my carpet fairly often. Just one of those cheapo machines but it is easy and does a fair job... better then I can do with a scrub brush and rags. Alas... I have about 1000 sq.ft. of light blue carpet that is 12 years old. Comments (4)This is all done in the planning and options, before the contract is signed. If the existing baseboards were left on as part of the remodel, I could see using shoe or quarter round, but if they are going to be brand new, I as the GC would place them after the flooring. What is most likely happening is he is trying to kill two birds with one stone. His trim guy is there to do other and all the trim at one time, which saves the GC for multiple trip charges. The GC can hang shoe molding fairly easy, but tall base can be challenging for those that don't do it everyday. You will lose the height of the baseboard, if they are down, and then shoe or quarter round used. However, can make a new impression of age of a home via paint job. Comments (180)leftontheinside We got our First Crush installed a few weeks ago, and there are saw marks. Some of our samples made them look very busy, and others didn't have them at all. We went through a local flooring store. The saw marks are definitely there, but not noticeable when looking at the floor as a whole (I looked at a lot of pictures because the saw marks were almost a deal breaker). We love the floors. 3 years agoThanks. Well, that is what I thought. I should have said we were not ready to buy "additional flooring". We reused the old carpet, and there is no way to match it. We have built 3 or 4 homes, and carpet was always last.
However, I think I DO need to tell him what kind of flooring I will be using, right? If I put a laminate floor plank or vinyl floor plank on the floor, will the baseboard trim be installed lower than it would be with carpet? Or does it not matter?
Another question... In a bedroom doorway, where should the carpet end? Inside the bedroom, outside the bedroom, or halfway in between (in the center of the door jamb)? Will the closed bedroom door cover the carpet?
It looks like he planned to use an iron to attach the new carpet to the old carpet, maybe? The two different carpets will not match at all, which is why I told him I was not ready. So, will he have to iron on a small strip of old carpet? (A couple of inches wide?) Doesn't the edge need to be attached to a carpet tack strip and turned under? Or does it get finished differently with plank flooring? I doubt I will find carpet to match so I am leaning toward vinyl planks.Thanks.

3 years agoTell the installer to keep base molding and the door jambs up the base-molding thickness, so when you install the carpet, the installer can tuck the carpet under the base and the jamb. All he has to do is cut a bunch of scraps of base and spread them along the wall and under the jamb.
