Honey Baked Ham
Comments (25)Ignoring the outburst.....and back to hams... To me....as I know it....a "country ham" is one that has been dry aged and has to be soaked, scrubbed and boiled in 2 changes of water before being baked. Then there is a fully cooked ham which is ready to eat and only needs to be warmed to eat if you like it hot...if not then just cut 'er up and eat. Than there is something else.....it's not cooked and the package says it needs to be cooked at thus and so for thus and so number or hours, or until a thermometer in the thickest part registers 160 degrees. The last ham I bought like that (a Smithfield for a funeral lunch) was wonderful....even if a pain to prepare......and I know that they are "raw" because the one that someone else cooked was like raw meat inside....I had to bake it more. I have no idea how those raw, but not country hams are cured. And I LIKE brown sugar glazed ham and cranberry sauce on my turkey and applesauce with my pork and fruit stuffed pork loin and sweet and sour shrimp. I love asparagus with hollandaise and trice baked potatoes with sour cream and cheese. I like butter on my whole grain bread.....sometimes even JAM!!!!! Forget the honey glazed ham and add your own honey if you want it sweet. Linda C...See Morecopy-cat honey baked ham anyone?
Comments (4)I saw a show on FoodTV last holiday season on Honey Baked Ham & it is a sugar/spices dry rub melted to create a glaze with blow torches. Each ham is individually torched. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to what they were putting in the rub mix. :( I'm not even sure there's actually honey in the glaze?! Search the FoodTV website...you might be able to find an article with "clues". I'm pretty sure I saw the episode on "Unwrapped". /tricia...See MoreCooking ham question???
Comments (16)cynic - The hams I cook are not pre-sliced. I usually have one of these in the refrigerator (linked below0 - it's great when the kids decide to come over at the last minute and leftovers are good for sandwiches or to serve with eggs for breakfast. When I have time I buy uncured hams at Trader Joe's - DH likes them better. His present this Christmas is a real Smithfield Ham. We haven't had one of those in years. It's definitey a 'different' taste. Here is a link that might be useful: 3 lb. Hatifield Black Forest ham...See MoreHam recommendation
Comments (26)Last Christmas when my family was visiting, my brother wanted to pay for the ham, but since he was flying in he couldn't actually bring it with him. He suggested ordering and picking up a Honey Baked (TM) Ham, but upon checking I found that the local store had closed and the next closest was about an hours drive away. Even though the price wasn't an issue (since he'd be paying) , I still couldn't bring myself to pay $80 for a ham. The local store had a special on Boar's Head Sweet Slice Ham for about $4.99 a pound, but didn't have any large ones left. I saw that they also had the same ham on offer at the deli (for $6.99 / lb sliced), and got an 8 pound ham (IIRC) and then managed to convince the manager to sell it to me whole at the lower advertised whole ham price. The ham is as good or better than the Honey Baked one I had had in the past. I only baked it enough to warm it through and made a glaze/sauce from a jar of habenero pepper jelly and some other ingredients....See Moremaddielee
