Count me out of that demographic!! I wear only what I like and am comfortable in, typically pretty classic styles.

One thing I do not get is women in sleeveless or very cut-out, skimpy dresses while the guys have on long sleeved shirts and jackets - I see this on news shows all the time. Either one must be very chilled or the other too warm. I would freeze wearing a sleeveless dress unless in the middle of a heat wave in summer!!

Have one cold shoulder dress that I had bought in October to wear to Mackinac Island but have seen sweaters with slits all the way down the arms, which I don't care for.

I'm not a fan unless the person wearing it is very young, fit and attractive. I think it looks ridiculous on older women especially when they are posing and looking very coquettish. Personally, I would freeze to death so I will never buy anything like that. Sleeveless dresses in the winter time look so out of place to me. I would be one giant goose bump.

Try to locate a plain straight cardigan. Sweaters shown are ugly and must be for the very young.

I agree with Flamingo, it's a fashion that looks best on the young and fit. As I have been out xmas shopping it is all that I see in stores. I chuckled when I saw a heavy wool sweater with no shoulders.

Not to mention women's and even younger girl's clothing is paper thin.

I like the look of a top with a cutout in the back (across the shoulders). Even older women can pull this off as the back doesn't age like the arms and chest do. Nor, does it get flabby like the stomach.

Totally agree about the skin tight, sleeveless dresses that female newscasters wear especially in the winter. Next to their male colleagues in suit and tie, it just isn't a professional look. I'd much rather see a woman broadcaster wearing a nice blouse and a blazer/jacket back like they did in the 80's. Or, even a blazer over the sleeveless dresses would be an improvement. Minus the shoulder pads, of course.

But, the trend of skimpy, sleeveless dresses isn't found only in the newsroom; it's also a look that many female corporate executives and managers wear these days. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but like it or not, we are judged by our appearance. For me personally, I'd tend to take a woman in a suit more seriously than one in a brightly colored, sleeveless dress.

They look ridiculous. I've never been a slave to trends, and trends are NOT fashion.

I have been looking for a new holiday top and many that I find are cold shoulder tops. I am in my 60's, trim and kind of fit but I still think I am too mature for this trend.

I heartily agree about the skimpy dresses on women newscasters, The contrast with the men in suits and ties is so obvious!!!

I don't think we should care what others wear.

Short jeans skirt when you're 80?? Do it.

Bikini in your 50's? Absolutely.

Housecoat to the club when you're 22? Go for it.

I think they are a trend. That does not mean they are suitable for everyone, just like a bikini is okay for some, and not for others......at any age. And no, I do not care what others wear.... I just refuse to wear things that are not becoming on me.....in fashion or not.

It wasn't that long ago everyone.....men & women....were wearing plaid flannel pajama pants out in public. That trend seems to have disappeared!

I haven't worried about fashion since moving out of the DC area 30 years ago. If I had stayed in a large metropolitan area I think I could have been a bit of a clothes-horse, because I did enjoy dressing up and fitting in with the other ladies.

I wonder how long the cut out sleeves and cold shoulder styles will be around. That's why I only bought the one dress as when they do go out of style that item would look pretty silly! Lol

Why would I want to draw attention to my *shoulders* -- or my *knees*? I also don't want people to try to guess if that's flesh showing through a lace or cutout dress. A flattering style has a nice neckline that draws the eye up to your face.

(Shades of, "My eyes are up *here*, mister!") If I wanted attention to my bosom, I'd wear one of those to-the-waist necklines -- and never, ever bend forward.

Of course. Only the designers will add a fur overlay to match the furry sandals and flip flops that the well dressed slave to fashion will replace her open toed winter boots with. Fur trimmed summer scarves, beach hats and sunglasses are right around the corner.

I have a couple of cold shoulder tops because I wanted a different look. I saw a sweater one today. I'm not a fan of that look.

One thing I do like is that modest wedding dresses appear to be making a comeback. I am so tired of strapless dresses. Dresses can cover a lot and still look gorgeous.

*snerk*, maybe the back does age like arms and chest, maybe it doesn’t, how will one know when you never see it! Besides, this sort of thing always starts well, gets to the fork where the discussion is about what older women should or shouldn’t wear and we end up with the vaguely specific conclusion that old women should be rounded up then chased like buffalo off a cliff in order to eliminate the problem of old ladies wearing stuff that is supposed to be for the young and then parading around where everyone has to endure seeing it.. ;)

Trends for only the very young and very fit? Quick, take pictures of any friends/relatives kids (or your own offspring) who fit thaose two parameters and then save them for the right moment to trot them out and illustrate the hilarious things they ran around wearing in lieu of showing childhood pics of them in the bath to anyone they introduce as a ‘plus one’ - or blackmail.

Nobody should wear stilleto heeled booties with open toes and faux fur lining/accents (do they want to look like they are growing Wookiee feet); fashion collections for Fall/winter should be practical - why a designer thinks anyone who doesn’t live in SoCal or another similar.h warm area has any use for cut out everything, clothes that vaguely remind of black plastic trasg bags, etc I guess we’ll never know. I recall Dita Von Teese beginning to be featured in the fashion week shows, thinking that maybe it was a sign I’d soon see retailers selling clothes designed to fit a more ‘bombshell’ body type. Unfortunately the little consumer fashion thar came from that couldn’t be worn as an outfit when planning to go out in public, even so the patterns drafted to create these items incorporated measurements that lord knows who the stuff was supposed to fit. And the heavy reliance on cheap lookimg, cheap feeling materials for consumer retail - especially of this garment type - didn’t do her any favors in terms of selling any of her limited collection releases.

I for one don't get the trend for big butts, to the point of having implants. I have a naturally big butt but I don't feel it's anything to be proud of.

I also don't get those big heavy painted on eyebrows that almost meet in the middle with squared off ends (they rarely look attractive on anyone- you have to have a certain kind of face to carry them of successfully IMO), or the fashion for cut straight across fingernails, which I think is just plain ugly.

Fashion should be fun. Those boots? I can see a teen wearing those. I actually like the cold shoulder look. I haven't yet found anything to buy yet. Most women have nice shoulders. I think Donna Karen is known for her off the shoulder looks for quite some time.

You never know how long something will stay in style. Fours years back I bought a pretty lace cocktail dress. I thought for sure lace would be out the following year. But, I could still wear that dress and not feel dated.

Cold shoulder tops and dresses have been around for a very long time....it's not a trend nor a temporary fad, ladies. Look at THIS WEBSITE to see some great examples from fashion history.

It's a fashion choice. I've seen very mature women in pretty cold shoulder tops; they look lovely and appropriate. Eld is correct, most women have pretty shoulders.

I have just a hard time imaging what sort of undergarments go with those off-shoulder/cut-out shoulder/backless outfits. To my endless dismay, I have a very generously endowed chest and own nothing that would work under such a style. And still be decent in public :-)

Our previous national morning news show always had one of the female anchors wear sleeveless dresses all winter long. Her male cohort wore shirt and tie with a suit. He'd rib her for having her heater on under the table, and he'd be hot. She looked ridiculous, and then having to have a heater on?? What's wrong with having the common sense to wear something warmer?

Some snow a couple of days ago, and they forecast a foot in the nearby city for overnight ... so when I looked out this morning, I was surprised to see the yard and nearby field looked just like it did last night.

I'm fine with our situation (rather than the 24-hour ploughing needed in the city).

But ... when I want a sweater, I wouldn't buy one with a slitted sleeve - 'cause I want *warm*!!

Re: whether or not older women should wear fashions meant for the younger crowd. There are plenty of young women who have no business wearing much of that type of clothing as well.

I know lots of mature women who work very hard to stay in shape, many of them are in better shape than a lot of young'uns. I don't see any problem with them showing off the bodies that they are proud of and rightfully so.

I totally agree with what Dawn said. I was trying to figure out how to say something very similar but she said it well.

I don’t like to dress exactly like everyone else. My style isn’t crazy and is fairly simple, but I do like to have a few trendy tops, shoes and things. I stay In shape but I don’t wear mini skirts or a bikini. Or tight leggings with my butt showing in public. I’m 69 and past what I believe is the appropriate age for wearing those things. But I will wear something fairly fitted if it is flattering on me in the right places.

I have a couple of cold shoulder tops and they are actually very comfortable, much like a t-shirt type fabric. I hope they stick around.

I totally know where you’re coming from on the bust blessed thing (30GG and 32G here, all naturally grown ;p) - strapless bras? Hahahahahahahahaha...not that I’ve seen!

Leggings are quite possibly the most awesome and comfy pants I’ve ever come across - the trick is to wear a top long enough to provide rear coverage. I tend to add a very narrow elastic belt a few inches below the bust for a quick fix that makes a tunic top look more tailored/custom fit without the need to drag out the sewing machine. Leggings are now my preferred pant where I used to wear yoga pants or athletic wear type pants - but not the only pant type I wear.

It's curious isn't it. Cut out/peak a boo/SKIMPY is all created to accentuate a woman's sexual side. Is that not a mixed message to the #metoo thing?!! Do we see how we are allowing this to happen!?!?!

It's a mixed message to men. Women turn themselves in to blatant sexual objects and then complain they're being treated as such.

Men have a lot to answer for, but so do women.

I'm thinking that some of you haven't really seen any examples other than trampy styles. It's a top fashion choice for mature women, and trust me.....we aren't trying to be blatantly sexual. TRUST ME.

The first time I saw a mature women in one of these tops was about three years ago in a restaurant. She appeared to be in her mid sixties, very refined, dignified, yet subtlety feminine.

Her top was so pretty; she looked perfectly lovely and respectful. I've added a couple of cold shoulder tops to my wardrobe because of her. She was pleasantly plump, by the way, not a hot mama, lol. Absolutely a gramma type.

(No question that she could wear her usual, wide strap heavy duty bra, lol! No straps showing.)

Right now I'm just a bit too cold to even consider any kind of top that could be classified 'cold shoulder'. It's COLD! I've got the space heater going down here in the basement computer area, two pairs of pants and a sweatshirt on. With thick socks and great big fuzzy slippers. Nebraska, no snow yet but COLD!

Jenn, it's not always "a blatant attempt to use their sexuality to 'confuse men'". Far from it. From what I see around me, many women seem to be as confused as men. They bare and/or vacuum package parts of themselves not because they're in touch with their sexuality, but because they're divorced from it.

Since fashion is about the presentation of human bodies in various social contexts, people inevitably get judged on their clothing choices.

1. I like the printed jeggings too. I have a couple of lighter weight types for summer, one black/ white and one navy/white and a couple little heavier material that I could wear this winter as the colors aren't as bright. I love them with ankle boots or knee high boots(for winter). They look nice with longer top or a blazer works good with all of them. Why is that goofy one there & won't let me backspace to get rid of it....on my iPad!

Fleece lined leggings are so comfy!

There's only ONE REASON the styles change every year, and that is to sell clothes and make money.

I wear whatever I like and buy what's comfy and looks good on me, leggings, cutout shoulders, etc. When I know a style will be out of fashion and I love it, I buy a lot of them. Age makes no difference. Wear what you like and what is comfortable.

If nothing appeals to you, just wait till next year when a whole new set of clothing will be in the stores.

GG they make fancy clipon bra strap covers. You can get them at Joann Fabrics. But bra straps and even bra fronts and backs are OK to show these days. But, different strokes for different folks...and that's what fashion is all about.
