Flooring Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Too blah?! How can I make this better?

I’m having the hardest time designing my bathroom. Nothing I’ve put together has been a “yes! This is it!” feeling.

To give you a feel, the top picture is exactly how our bathroom will be laid out. Bottom 2 pictures are the 2 designs I’ve picked out as maybes. The larger tile on the bottom of both photos is flooring, subway tile on the right will be shower and the drop in tub and the mosaic will be sink backsplash and shower accent. Cabinets will be white.

What needs to change? should I do large 12x24 subway tile or something smaller? Should shower and tub be the same sized tile?

I think gray is blah so that could be part of your problem. Also you don't have any dramatic tile like the inspiration picture. All pieces that you've chosen blend into 1 monotone design

It looks fine to me but if you’re feeling like it looks “blah” I don’t think the size of the tile is the problem.

I like the idea of removing all the plants laying gravel or pavers, I was thinking that would probably be the best way to control the weeds. The fountain needs a new pump but will work just fine once it has one, I was thinking I might wait on that until I get the dirt covered. I'll have to move the fountain out of the way to do that and was wondering if it might be better placed somewhere else? There is an entrance hatch to the underfloor of the house right next to the fountain, it's kind of an eyesore but needs to remain accessible. I was thinking of getting a wrought iron table that would straddle it to make it less obvious. I was also thinking of getting a nice looking rain barrel to put at the end with the gutter. I want to strike a balance between busyness and barrenness, I'd like the fountain to be the focus without it sitting alone on a gray stretch of rock. I'm also wondering about the heights of things, should I look for some of those iron plant stands so that the fountain is not so much taller than everything else? Hostas aren't very well suited to my climate, we have to conserve water so I try to limit my 'heavy drinkers' to things that I can't live without - like veggies and roses. I'm thinking that Spider Plants will do well there, they don't mind the shade and are fine with minimal watering. I have some in a similar spot and they are happy and sending out lots of little babies, so maybe I'll just take some cuttings and see how they do. Thanks for the suggestions, please give more : )

Thanks Ranton and Christina. The stucco repair is somewhat less of an issue since its on a side of the house that no one would really see so that would not need to be perfect. At a minimum raising the existing window will create this work. My short term goal is to end up with three different plans and compare the pros and cons between them; counter space, cabinet volume, function and cost. Lisa - I see great benefit to moving that exterior door I would just need to consider the cost aspect. As far as the large window, that would be great, but I do not have an attractive view on that side of the house. I essentially look at my neighbors house and driveway which is very narrow. Pic shows my neighbors driveway on the left, my kitchen window looks over their driveway and their own kitchen window. Very narrow and not a great view. This was my thought on walling up the window since I have no real view, but natural light and fresh air is also important.

My stairs are too steep - how can I make them better?

Each step needs to be deeper so the total area taken up by the stairway would have to be greater. Essentially the entire stair has to be rebuilt starting from the top allowing for a 10" deep tread (plus overhang) and 7" rise. You could make it somewhat less challenging by reducing the number of winder steps from four to two, rebuild only the bottom section and add 2 treads at the bottom. This would make the stair stick out at least another 20", blocking whatever's to the left of the door where the carpet starts. Done correctly this stair would probably extend through that doorway.

The living room is cozy. It does need more height decor. I love mirrors, but I have heard it is not suggested to put them on same wall as tv due to eye distraction of reflection while watching tv. I would hang them higher on opposite wall of window to relect view & light. As for the tv area, depending on your taste, there are lots of attractive options available.

Hi!

Nice monochromatic color palette; only issue is it lacks light/dark values---needs some contrast. I like all, but the subway tile you selected for both designs.

If you look at your inspiration photo the busiest tile, the one which has the most pattern, is on the tub and shower walls, not the floor. Therefore, it might be best to use the tiles you selected for the floor on the walls and look for another floor tile that contrasts in value with the wall.

Here's two examples for you. I hope it's helpful.

I like the 12 x 24 tile in the first photo as your flooring (could maybe be slightly darker). I think what your missing in this bathroom is warmth, so I would introduce a wood grain on your vanity, scratch the granite looking Greenstone counter top and go for an all white counter in Greenstone or a slab of marble (you could probably find a remnant for the size of your counter) to bring in some warmth. I'd lose the tile accent (IMO tile accent strips are dated) and go with a plain white subway tile or Carrara for the bath and the shower (on the larger size - 6 x 12 is a nice contrast to 12 x 24 flooring tile - usually its a 12 x 12 cut in half and most masons will do this no problem). Nice size bathroom - good luck :)
