The gambrel scheme would require a week of intensive design work that is probably beyond the capability of those who are helping you. As a fall back to avoid the unfortunate original design I recommend using regular gables as tack-ons at the sides and a real cross gable on the front and rearranging the front rooms so the windows work. Flaring the front gable shingles over the windows and at the bottom would add a great deal to the design. The house should have shingles and no corner boards. I would consider trim colors other than white. You might be able to dress it up a bit with more gables but the framing would be slightly more complicated.

Start by reading The Not So Big House by Sarah Susanka. It was such an eye opener when I was creating my house. we would maybe end up paying the architect more for changes but in the long run Im sure we would be glad we did.. Make sure you're working with a talented architect who specializes in residential. Yes you'll pay more but you're building a legacy home in that you live and work on a farm. That's a heck of a lot different than my narrow city lot home. we looked through so many house plan books that we seen this and tried to make it fit but all of you on this forum have really opened my eyes to some needed changes.. The majority of house plan books and online plans are designed for small lots because that's how the majority of people live. They don't have the benefit of looking out onto 100+ acres like you have. That's why you couldn't find what you really want in a plan book. Truth is, I couldn't find what I wanted in a plan book either. I looked too. And my whole lot is 9100 square feet. I was just trying to be conscious of a budget and keep square footage in mind but I think we could use the footage we currently have much better Budget is important for all of us and while we went over budget designing the house, by spec'ing everything out ahead of time and needing very few change orders, we actually wound up saving in the long run. Honestly looking at your house, I'm assuming you have a couple of kids. If it were me, I'd probably look into designing a T shaped house with the master and bedrooms on the top of the T and the public rooms on the long tail of the T. Use your master bath/closets to block your master from the kids rooms. This way you're still near enough them to know if they need you but far enough away for them not to disturb you.

Trying to maintain the simple lines of the existing structure. Remove gable and use same roof material everywhere. New roof extends to existing ridge. Columns smaller. Remove additions around garage door. "Grand" is in the eye of the beholder. IMO, just having a lake house is pretty grand. :-) Can you post some inspiration pics of houses you think look grand? Then we can suggest how to modify what you have. What elements of the back do you love?
