Thanks Davidtay! I definitely would prefer if the layout was symmetrical, but that's the concept I'm having trouble grasping with the diagonal wall (fireplace). I would also, if possible, like to incorporate a 4" gimbal spot over the fireplace to accentuate a framed picture. I have read through a majority of your LED recessed lighting discussion, and have found it quite helpful in determining my lighting requirements for our kitchen.

Scalloping is a function of the distance from the wall. Once installed, getting rid of that scallop is nearly impossible. If you don't want to use CFL's , I reccommend trying Satco's "soft par" lamps. which will provide a little more horizontal light, and soften the starkness of the halogen lamps, and perhaps lessen the scallop effect. By dimming your light bulbs, you will get a yellower light, and lenghten the life of your bulbs twofold

I've been doing some more digging on this site and I feel like I'm starting to make some headway, but I do have a couple more questions. 1) I realize a recommendation of 35 lumens per sq.ft. is for a kitchen, and I realize a family room would not require that level, but what would a suitable level be? If I use the 35 as a "rough guide" my 18' X 11'6" family room would need 12.60 cans (if a CR6 is 575 lumens)When I look at my ceiling it seemed like 8 cans would be too many.... Am I overlooking something here or do I need 12 lights? 2) A lot of people here say the LED output exceeds incandescent output but I believe I saw nother post that said the lumens on a Par 30 - 50 or 60 watt was 600 lumens and the CR6 is 575 lumens. Again, am I missing something ? 3) If I have to use more than 6 or 8 cans, and the Lumen rating on the CR4 is the same as the CR6, can I get away with using the CR4s instead? It would be a more pleasing look. One last question if I can please. I saw post saying the CR6 had a pleasant "tone" at full brightness but when dimmed it was rather cold and flourescent looking. Is this typical or is the wrong dimmer being used ? Once again, Thank you David, I'll try not to bother you anymore.

Thank you both for the sample photos! I suppose one upside of recessed lighting would be it would highlight the beautiful plaster crown molding in the room. I was at the home today, and the ceilings are 8' 3". The light fixture in my pictures above is 24 in long, I'm hoping it can be flush mounted thereby eliminating the length of the chain. As Jan noted, there should be no head - banging in the room. :) To Jan and others, if I do find an appropriate light for the ceiling in the family room, would I want to mimic the original ceiling medallion above the dining room light? Below I have attached a photo of the dining room light, I'm thinking a medallion in the family room would be too matchy-matchy or out of place. I have also attached other angles of the family room in question, and as I've noted in a different post, I plan on going very brown with the floors in this room. Thank you everyone!
