Need Help! We bought an ugly house!
Comments (3)STEP ONE: Relax. It's not nearly as ugly as you think it is. Live there for a while and decide what to do. Also - visit the landscaping forum at Gardenweb and ask advice. Post several pictures - GOOD ones, not fuzzy cell phone stuff: 1 - full front of house, taken from across the street so we can see the whole thing. Include approximate dimensions. 2 and 3 - Pictures taken from an angle that show the front corners and sides of the house. Comments (6)Your house will be quite cute with just a bit of work. I agree with you about beefing up the trim and removing the shutters. I would put a nice window box below the window. In the winter, you can put evergreen boughs in it. Right now the house has the blaas because the paint choice and roof color don't compliment one another. Even if all you do is paint that little strip of trim up by the roof line a contrasting color, the house would be cheerer. Dark blue, deep red or a rich gray-green would do wonders. Then you can think about painting the main part of the house after you settle in. The landscape could be easily fixed with a deep garden area in front of the window and the addition of perennials and small evergreens as dainaadele has shown. The suggestion of a curved walkway in an interesting material is also a good idea. Diane...See MoreHelp me convince my husband this house is perfect out
Comments (24)Debra, if this is your first home and you have a typical first time home buyers budget there is going to be a lot of compromise. Most of us don't get everything we want in our first home, and sometimes we never own our "dream home". The important thing is that being able to buy your first home puts you in the game. Try to find a home that is in a decent neighborhood that has good bones and won't need a ton of updates to be comfortable. The kitchen may have wood cabinets and you may prefer white, but more important - are there enough cabinets to hold your dishes and are they in decent shape. You can live with wood, but you can't live with cabinets that are falling off the walls or have shelves that bow in the middle. Making sure the home has been maintained and the roof, HVAC, plumbing, foundation, windows and doors are in good shape is important. You can improve the colors and make things pretty, but as long as it functions well that can come in time. Find your home, move in, live there for a year, figure out how your budget is working with the added expense of home ownership. Keep a journal of the things that work and don't work for how you live. Plan a renovation budget and tackle the biggest pain points first. This is a marathon and you have many years to accomplish you goals....See MoreHelp me design our neutral living room with my husband’s AUDIOPHILES
Comments (46)Since the TV is 100% staying in this room above the fireplace, the room will be visually lopsided even if all the stereo stuff is moved out. It will look better with some other dark colours in the room. Doesn't need to be a new sofa, just some darker decor items. I'd start with that to begin with. Maybe pick up some of the blues from your art work. Then move the stereo rack to where you have the table and decor items. Eventually you could replace it with one in a wood tone that either goes with your dining room table or the aquarium stand. Maybe with doors, maybe lower and wider so components can go side by side. Add art work above it, to give the eye an attractive place to go, because the mirror in that spot is too bland. Cord covers can go along the baseboard or around doors. Paint them to match the walls or the baseboard. Amazon or hardware stores have all different kinds, very easy to use. It seems unlikely that any of us will be able to produce a photoshopped room that will inspire him with your vision. I think you need to take the first steps to make the room more attractive, move out the table and decor items, and ask him to just move the stereo stuff either to the other room or to the right of the fireplace....See Morekmg0205
