Gardening likes and dislikes
Comments (39)What an interesting conversation this has been. How different we are in our likes and dislikes. I guess one of the things I like most is getting out in the spring as soon as the first green shows. i try to try at least a few new perennials or shrubs each year and I have to see if they made it through the winter. We have always been on the border line of zone 4 and 5. Now almost the entire state of Iowa is considered zone 5. This will be an interesting spring. Ten of the last 12 days have been below zero. I planted some new butterfly bushes last year. We'll see. I don't like lawn work, but I live with my daughter and she loves to mow lawn. That takes care of that. I don't mind watering, fertilizing, or weeding. I do not like deadheading. Visitors ? That is one of my greatest pleasures. By visitors, I mean those who stop by who actually want to look at the gardens. Family, friends, or those who just want to visit? No. I feel uncomfortable unless they ask to see them, knowing that they may not be all that interested. Right now, I am enjoying going through all the new catalogs. So, bring on Spring !!...See MoreDoes anyone watch ' My house is worth what?'
Comments (11)I think of the equity in my homes as my 'cushion'. It is like losing or gaining in the market. When the market when down, I 'lost' gobs, before I slowly gained it back. But, I didn't really lose anything but potential. It's just a number on a piece of paper, unless I was going to sell it. Equity is the same thing. To me, it initially is just how much my indebtedness is reduced. It becomes a real entity only when I turn a house over. And because of that, equity is a very mobile and dynamic thing. Telling someone how much their equity is, even when consider all the factors, is a number good for TODAY, only. Borrowing against it to the maximum current worth of a house is a very risky proposition. Using it to justify a purchase if you actually have the money at hand, but wonder if it is well spent is another horse altogether. Knowing the numbers can stop somebody from throwing money at a house when it's obvious they'll never recoup it. That given, if they still want their upgrades well, it's their money. I was selling one of my houses the last time I watched this program and how seriously the owners seemed to take the $ value the appraiser suggested. I thought immediately of my listing agent, who threw out a suggested sales price I knew was not going to happen. I listed at 20% lower than she suggested, and then dropped the house another 10% to the amount I figured I'd get before I listed it. I still made a profit, but not a killing. What if someone on that show is told their house would list at X amount. Well, list price and sales price are two different numbers....See MoreDoes anyone else watch 'Rehab Addict'?
Comments (24)I liked her earlier shows more than the ones since the $1 houses began. I think it all started with the Minihaha (totally misspelled I'm sure) house. After that one she's cheezed out on stuff more, probably because she sank a LOT into that place and didn't really get it back. The latest one (I think), omg I would have been all over all that stuff! I have an old sunbeam mixer like the one they found in that house-although it's in my attic and I use my 4C kitchenaid instead since I have some of the Hobart attachments for it. I also don't care for her color choices. black and white, black and white...gray...and the latest house, the exterior, with the detail work painted in pink and the house brownish-ick. There's a house in the city we used to live in, that had similar details, but the whole place was painted various pink/maroon shades with some white, and it looked MUCH better. ALTHOUGH, I have to say, DH laughs when we watch it because I'm a lot like her with salvage. There was one episode that involved her collection of old doors and she said something like "why do I have all these old doors" and before she could answer herself I said "because they're so cool" or something like that-then she said the exact same thing (I'm having an issue with storage of salvage myself, with a small house and no basement, although I DO still have a small collection of old doors anyway, lol)....See MoreAusten inspired books- for or against? like or dislike?
Comments (18)Yet another P&P spin-off will be hitting UK TV screens this Autumn with a new series Lost in Austen. The story line appears to be . . . our modern day heroine is a big JA fan and finds herself able to go back into the world of P&P. But will her knowledge of the outcome of the story alter what takes place in the world she has entered? Also look out for yet another TV adaptation of Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Many of the outdoor rural scenes were shot in my area. They wanted a realistic 'backwards' landscape. :-) Pity I didn't know it was happening, maybe I could have got a part as an extra playing 'an aged crone' or 'third hag'. Another Dickens series is coming up, this time Little Dorrit. Last year Bleak House was beautifully produced. Some of you may have seen it....See MoreAdella Bedella
