Any suggestions for this bedroom?
Comments (23)I never thought of it as not being girly enough. Patty, don't feel bad for saying that though, I asked my DH and he said he thought it looked like a guest room! :-D However, I am going soldier on and go with what I have started. Right now its pretty much devoid of any decorative stuff, and I'm hoping as we start getting some of her dolls in there, pictures on the wall (I have some fairy pictures I'm going to frame out of a book), maybe some display shadowboxes on the wall, it will feel more like her room than a guest room. I was hoping that if I give her a pretty framework - then she will be able to personalize it as she gets a little older with artwork, objects on shelves, etc. Right now I have some pieces waiting to be hung (that I picked out) but she will be able to change those if she shows an interest. Below are two examples of the style of print fabrics I would like to aim for, to make the room more airy. The off-white bedspread is staying, and although you can't see in the pics it is sort of a matelasse fabric with a paisley / boteh shape on it. I also will be changing out the pine IKEA plant table - its temporary. Forgot to add that the room was just painted SW Dover white (a warm white) and that will *not* be being changed any time soon! :-) Where the white bookcase is now, I was planning on finding some inexpensive piece on Craigslist, a vintage vitrine perhaps, and I could line inside the doors with shirred fabric, to help get some fabric at this end of the room. Or a cupboard that could hold things. Or even a larger bookcase if all else fails. Pam, your daughter's books are so neat, I'm impressed :-) that slanted piece really helps - they have one at my kids' preschool. The bed in the middle of the wall is definitely more asthetically pleasing (and perhaps easier to make), but in a small room I feel like it just eats up too much valuable floor space :-( I thank everyone again for the input, and I'll keep posting my progress (it'll be slow unfortunately, as my mom and I will be doing the sewing ourselves, and I'll be hunting on craigslist for inexpensive vintage furniture). Oh, and the first thing my daughter did when she saw the rearrange is to go dance around in the big blank space on the rug :-)...See MoreGlass panel for dressing area privacy?
Comments (9)Palimsest, thank you for that info. I need to dig a little deeper with the glass co. to see which install method they are assuming. I wonder about "spackling in" flanges. Seems like something that would lead to cracking around the flange edges over time. They have given me a $1,000 estimate for a 3/8" satin-etch glass panel 30" w x 72" tall, secured by a brushed nickel channel at the bottom and side along the wall, including installation by their people. A 96" panel going to the ceiling would cost more, of course. The panel will be right on the line between the floor tile in the bath/vanity area and the hardwood in the rest of the dressing and bedroom area, which should make it easier to install the floor channel. I've attached a photo that is pretty close to what we want. Ignoring the toilet and shower area in the left side of the pic, we are planning a custom wall-mount vanity similar to the one shown, gray floor tile similar to what is shown, and a glass panel that would extend beyond the vanity, just like the one shown. This picture shows the vanity not quite touching the panel, which raises the issue of whether there should be some kind of attachment there to avoid debris falling between. The etched glass is opaque enough that I don't think the vanity side facing it would have to be totally finished (the other end of the vanity will butt up against the wall, so our hope was that we could avoid the expense of finishing more than just the front of the vanity)....See MoreBedroom layout ideas!?
Comments (93)Haha thanks everyone for helping make an easy decision! So sofa is centered to the wall now too, which means room for a side table and or a standing lamp. I will post updates of how the room is coming along, especially when I get my new rug :)...See MoreAdvice for picking budget-friendly bedding for guest bedroom
Comments (12)I have a guest room bed and keep two sets of bed linens. I just keep 4 pillows (2 with matching duvet covers, two matching white sheets) sheet set, and a duvet. The teens hang out in there with our dog, nephews nap, etc. I always have an extra set washed, folded, and placed in a linen bag. When we have guests overnight I toss the clean set in the dryer to fluff it up and replace the bedding, folding an extra blanket at the foot incase they need it. And I keep the pillows double lined, first with a zippered pillow protector. I don't buy expensive bedding, and have been happy with what I've found at Target for sheets. I really like the IKEA duvet cover called Ofelia vass for $40. It's thick, white, and looks good wrinkled because it has a textured "puff" or something. I don't know how to explain it really. It gets a bit of a puffy crinkled effect when washed/dried. I wash them in hot water often and they hold up great....See MoreBrendan C
