Florida Beach House Natural Rugs

Florida Beach House - I have ceramic tile floor that runs through both rooms. I need rugs in both rooms. Coastal decor. Should I do natural rugs in both rooms and hallway or a different style rug in each room. White slipcovered sofa and chairs. Jute, sisal or seagrass? Whitewashed reclaimed wood DR table w/assorted rattan and other type chairs. Layering neutrals with some turquoise decor and so forth. And, should I cover most of the floor or leave a walkway? Don't like the tile but it's in good shape.

Please advise on rugs and any other advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Does your AC run at all times? If not, they will mildew and rot. A friend put sisal rugs all through a house on Martha's Vineyard that was not heated in the winter. Rotted rugs with fur growing on them created her the next summer.

Parking in Indian Rocks Beach- there is some free parking, it's right across the street from Keegan's (great food!) and it is a row of parking- about 15 - 20 cars can go there and if you get there early enough, like around 10 AM or so, you can stay all day. And one block north is a car park area where you pay to park and it has nice restrooms and I think a shower for getting the sand and salt off. It's across from Guppies Restaurant, which also has good food, but I like Keegan's better. This is at 16th and 17th streets on Gulf Blvd. The beach house we go to is between those 2 streets, that's how I know this for sure. And there are other areas that have free parking, too, you just have to learn what to look for. We have walked to Caladesi Island, we parked at the northern most park south of the "island" and walked about 2 miles up, I would guess. The part that made it an island before got filled in with sand some years ago. That's the place where the rogue seagull stole Woody's big, fresh london broil sandwich right out of his hand! It was a riot. Oh, you can usually find sand dollars up there, too.

Palimpset, it's funny that you say it looks accumulated as I worried that it was too matchy-matchy because of all the rattan. I think my propensity towards that approach is based on watching Sarah Richardson putting a room together. Cawaps, there's definitely a lot going on in the room, but I did try and limit the forms to organic shapes and the colors to the color palette from the sofa fabric. It really was about finding a fabric that included both the deep red of the fixture and the orange of the carpet. It would definitely not be a restful living room, but I think would be great for parties. The fabric is from here: http://www.fabricguru.com/p-fabric-by-the-yard/terrace-printed-polyester-outdoor-atlantis-1 and it comes in a couple of other color ways. It's an outdoor fabric so it should be fairly kid-friendly. Positively Patty, The wall color reads to me as a little green, I wonder if a paler version of the pale cream in the carpet would be more restful? Crl, finding the sofa fabric was definitely key. I like the balance between organic curves and linearity in your room.

I would recommend a wool carpet pad under whatever it is you buy, it will protect your wood floor and prevent any type of chemical reaction on your floor finish, it will keep your rug from shifting and scratching your wood floor. No laytex, rubber or vinyl backings are a good idea it could really cost you in the long run.

Yes, my AC does run or else my entire property would grow mold.

Thanks for the tip! I had no idea the rugs would mold.

Thought you might enjoy this article Rugs in Tropical Climates. Here's a little blurb from the article...

...Wool is a natural fiber. It breathes, like all natural fibers. Unlike man-made carpets and rugs made from petroleum and oil-based products, wool does not react to heat and humidity like plastic products. Wool fiber can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture vapor without feeling damp. So, at times of high humidity, wool absorbs moisture and then releases this moisture again when the atmosphere is dry, acting as an atmospheric buffer.

In conditions of high humidity, generally found in the tropics, invariably it is the carpet backing that is first affected by mildew, mold, or fungus. Wool fiber is naturally quite mildew resistant, especially as it will tend to have a relatively low pH acid level. Backings for all carpets can now be treated to avoid the mold and mildew problems experienced in the past.
