Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Would you paint this garage door?

This week we are having our home painted a medium grey color with a red front door. We are removing the shutters and will keep the white trim. Our steel roof is dark charcoal. We were originally going to keep the aluminum garage door white but some have suggested we paint it the same color as the body. Now the painters are starting and I'm having second thoughts about painting it. Opinions please. Thank you.

I like garage doors painted same color as house. It will look like a new house with new paint, steel roof and red door. Nice

When a garage appears to take 1/3 of the front fascade, it is a good idea to paint same as house, to make it “invisible”. Gives illusion of a bigger house, even though that section is for cars.

Thank you. I just hope it won't require too much upkeep once it's painted. Now all I do is hose it off. Does it require a primer before being painted?

Try it with the same trim color, but if it pops out too much, go back and do the gray that's on the doors. I'm thinking the trim color will defeat the purpose of blending in the garage doors and side doors. You don't want to call attention to the garage doors, right? Even having gray or black french doors with white trim would have the effect of outlining the doors and making them stand out rather than recede. JMO

@cat_ky It's been 3.5 years since the house was last stained, by the previous owners. We live at the top of a bluff and the weather can be really intense - driving wind and rain. The painters that bid were all happy to stain the house for us but just said we would have to do it again in 3-4 years. I don't think they cared one way or the other what product we used but warned us that it would be more expensive over time.

Good point about the garage doors fading away. When I bought my house they were a contrasting color. Once I painted them the same color as the body of the house, the house seemed much larger. Also, the front porch was more prominent. I think if you do this for your house, then your very lovely front porch will become the focal point. Right now, it competes with the garage doors. So i recommend painting the garage doors a color that is very much like your brick and selecting a color for the front door to make it pop.

We painted ours just a shade darker than the house which is the same as the trim. I much prefer the look.

Yes is should have a primer coat, preferably sprayed. And before priming it should be cleaned really well.

The garage door should blend into the siding - same color or a shade darker if that is your preference. Unpainted doors look unfinished. If you paint the doors a contrasting color the garage door takes over the entire front.

Paint it. If properly painted with regard to whether metal or wood, it can be hosed and cleaned. Ultimately all garage doors need to be painted anyway.
