First thing I would do is have the tv mounted properly by a professional so you can hide all the ugly cords behind the set. I don’t know why your tv storage unit is not centered under the tv, but the next thing you need to do is get a longer piece of furniture under the tv. The tv should be 2/3 the width of the tv console storage piece. That’s a start anyway.

What is the red and black checkered furniture? Does it need to be there? Three things I can see...TV too high and pictures over your couch too high. Need larger cabinet under your TV.

Have you checked out West Elm in the city? I am a big fan of divans and they sell a lot of them. They are modern and are sold in sections so you can configure them in the way you like. West Elm stores are located all over the NYC metro area. Check out the site--they have great sale that's going on right now so you may be able to get a good deal on a sofa. Good luck! I am more than happy to share where this stuff came from and am extremely flattered. The rug is the "Brice" rug from Pottery Barn, 9 X 12. The sectional is made by Jonathan Louis. It is called "Knobhill" and the fabric is called Basil Flannel. I got it at a local furniture store but I saw somewhere that Jonathan Louis furniture might be available at Macy's. The website has a dealer locator: http://jonathanlouis.net/. One armchair is coming this evening. I am going to arrange it all again and post another photo. This is immensely helpful and I am just sorry that I can't try every suggestion! Have a spare small desk in the garage, and will try whatever else I can get my patient DH to do. To make things more complicated, I found out that I can order another piece for the sectional. Since I bought the floor model I didn't think of it before. It will seamlessly extend the longer side another 28". That side will def. have to go against the wall (as in the first photos), but the room will be filled out a little more. Yet another option! I think I have decided against exchanging for a sofa/loveseat. One more question: when moving the sofa away from the wall, how far should it be? Just enough to balance things, or enough for an acutal person to pass through?

Do you see potential problems with the couch/sectional not providing a lot of space between the hallway and the room? Or perhaps I need to find smaller furniture or move the couch closer? I think the previous owners also made the room a dining room, which is why the chandelier is there. However, not pictured is our kitchen that openly connects to a room with a fireplace, and we're planning to make that room the dining area. Thank you for your opinion!

Tape the furniture patterns on the floor. The fireplace is a long distance from the kitchen. I like the idea of mounting to the left of the glass doors. Put cabinets or shelves on either side of the fireplace, put a similar console under the tv. Float a sofa (not to big and not a sectional) facing the tv. Chairs that swivel from sofa to tv give you more flexibility and are better for entertaining. Your existing chairs can sit on either side of the fireplace. Rug under sofa and complementary smaller rug in front of fireplace will define the areas. Put a small, low coffee table in front of the fireplace. I wouldn’t put the tv over the fireplace. The furniture you will have to put in front will take up the space you need for walking between outside and the library. That would be too much going on. Put solar shades over the glass doors if you are worried about light. Now, if you don’t have a place for a kitchen table elsewhere or are entertaining board game players, then put a round table and chairs near the kitchen and the sitting area near the fireplace with the fireplace mounted tv ( make sure you have a way on that fireplace to hide wires and manage heat).

Long console on the TV wall and TV siting on console.

Lose the shutter as they are taking up real estate and breaking up the room; replace with cell shades or blinds, add stationary curtain panels. Center the sofa on the long wall and center the art work about 5 inches bottom of art from top of sofa back.

Place your two chairs on either side of sofa on an angle so you can see tv from all seating areas. Buy two small cubes to act as ottoman/cocktail table area for extra seating and stuff.

Add matching end tables and matching big lamps on each end of sofa and large piece of art over sofa; think Pier !, TJMaxx, etc. Post pictures. paint the room all one color for unity and to make it appear bigger.

Here are some ideas of smaller compact sofas. And they seem to have room to add your two small chairs for extra seating.

If that black and red checkered thing is a futon and you're keeping it, it needs to turn to face the window. Center the sofa on its wall and center the art above it, about 6" above the back. If those are separate canvases, use only four of them and hang them all at the same level about 1 1/2" apart. The chair might fit in the corner by the window angled toward the futon.

Get a proper TV console that covers the whole wall under the TV. Lower the TV to about 5" above it.
