Windows 7 repair disk help

Shut computer down and went away over night. Came back the next day and husband booted it up and I guess something is corrupt. I wasn't there to see what happened but when I boot it I get the choice of boot to desktop or repair. I click repair and it goes to a light blue screen and no desktop icons.

Got on the windows 7 laptop and created a repair disk. I have done this for a few people and got their computer up and running but not recently so I am probably forgetting something. I got to this screen and assume I need to set it to the CD/ DVD for boot right? I can go down but when I hit enter nothing happens. Mary

Not being funny, but after you press the ENTER key to select CD/DVD drive do press ESC like the screens says? If this isn't the BIOS screen, maybe you could go into the BIOS and select the CD/DVD drive as the 1st boot device. Then, do a reboot.

No I am not pressing escape, silly me. I thought that meant it would boot to the default they have set. Was thinking it should do something when I hit enter. Will try that. How do I get to the bios? Mary

the trial version is usually not the regular full version of Microsoft office it is usually the Home and Student version as in the link I will give you below. Since they are different versions I would say you should do a full install with your disc of your MS office 7. the version that comes as a trial can be very difficulty to remove, using REVO uninstaller (free) will help to remove it fully. You may want to google this remove microsoft office home and student 2007 trial. You will then see some of the problems with it. Here is a link to REVO. Revo Uninstaller just be sure you get the free download. If by some off chance your pc did come with the full version of MS office 7 I think I would still do the uninstall and reinstall the full version from your disc so you know exactly what you have and do not risk running into a problem with using your existing key code. Long ago I heard a comedian say that some teenage years are awkward because kids think they're cool, they think they've learned "Where it's at/What it is" but it's usually before they learn what to do with "it". This story has some of that. Unless you're trying to speed up frequent read/write ops of very large files, RAID 1 is useless. RAID anything is never backup anyway and given how many drives get fried by power surges, lightning or power supply problems, backing up anything to a second internal drive is unlikely to be of value for disaster recovery. It's onboard, in the same box, in the same room, and is vulnerable to have the same problem at the same time as the primary drive does. If PC access is mission critical for making money (work or business), make sure you have or have immediate access to a PC spare. If this is just a personal make-work project or you're trying to plan ahead to avoid inconvenience, I say cool down and calmly get or make recovery disks. I'd ignore the second internal drive.

I am using DVD+R to reuse one I have, looking in my physical file I see I have 5 new ones that don't need to be erased. Still I wonder. I purchased these back in 2007, progress may have left them behind. The label is: DVD RW, DVD+R I should be able to read and write, hum, doesn't say erasable. The mfg is Memorex and proudly proclaims: Recordable, Enregistrable and Grabable the last two of which I have no clue to the meaning. I think I may have purchased them for use in a DVD audio/video recorder.. but that is digital too. I am pretty sure I can stick in my DVD player/recorder (not on the computer) and erase/overwrite..not sure I want to got to the trouble to check. Thanks for the link to third party DVD software. I'll look there but most likely will just use a new DVD. It lists a 4.7 GByte capacity. Does newer technology hold more? I think the Toshiba script talked about 4.7 GByte (may be the standard still) and two DVDs.

Basically it's safe and the right thing to do, imo. If you don't run the disk check, you would risk writing new photos to a damaged area of the drive. As long the disk's file table is not damaged, probably the worst that would happen is a few bytes or sectors have some corruption, and if you're lucky, you only have one or two damaged or irretrievable photos. If you do lose access to the drive, there are recovery tools specifically for recovering photos, namely "PhotoRec" which works very well. Check this website for further info on getting into BIOS: https://www.lifewire.com/bios-setup-utility-access-keys-for-popular-computer-systems-2624463. If you follow the original screen you showed, you may not need to do this. Also, to get to the bios screen you TAP the proper Function key, don't hold it down.

Thanks I did end up finding that website I think. I figured out on HP I had to tap F11 I think it was for the bios. Changed it but it is still not booting to repair disk. When I put the disk in I don't even hear it spinning so I have to wonder if it died too. Will take it some where to see if it can be fixed. Everything was backed up except for a few very recent photos I would like. Went and bought a new Lenovo all in one desktop and yoga laptop today. My son has a Lenovo think pad and I liked it when I played with it so decided I would give them a try. My son uses a WD my passport ultra so thinking I will get one for the new desktop and just have it back up nightly now. Out with the old in with the new. Mary

Went and bought a new Lenovo all in one desktop and yoga laptop today.

There's one way to solve the problem! I have a Lenovo Yoga and like it very much.

So far I am loving windows 10 on the laptop, don't have the desktop hooked up yet. I don't see why a lot of my friends are hating 10 but I do adapt to technology quite well. Mary
