There should be some info in your user manual of how to create it..as long as the original setup is on their from the factory and the restore partition has not been touched..if there was an OEM copy of Win7 (clean install) put on and the HDD was formatted then, you are out of luck

Jerry if you mean will the Windows 7 repair CD give the the chance to wipe the drive and re-install then no it will not. This CD - on mine at least - is only 142 megs in size and is designed one presumes to overcome any difficulty trying to boot normally.

You should look for a restore partition on the computer and burn that to a DVD

Did you try Windows Help? I just queried my Vista Help using the keywords "system repair" (sans quotes). Though not all the information was on point to your question their was a couple topics, and a lot of other interesting information which I look forward to reviewing.

Thanks, and I used the W7 Repair disc utility to create a "Repair disc Windows 7 64 Bit" and it fit on a CD, i.e., is a not a factory "restore" disc.

I'd also like to make a Factory Restore disc and my new Toshiba has a utility to do so, and it requires DVD capacity and does not provide for format/erase of the media before writing. Being a frugal person (retired engineer)I figure I'll reuse my 4.7 Gbyte DVD+R that I used to create a restore disc for my Acer notebook in 2007 (I ended up not keeping that notebook). Now, I can put in a new DVD, but I will still wonder why I can not "format" the old DVD+R and reuse it. Windows 7 will not format DVD+R if I recall my search for tools correctly. So I went to my XP computer to format the DVD and can't find a utility there either.

So, I'd appreciate any pointers on how to format a DVD+R in W7 or XP.

Try the erase option in windows 7. See what that does.

Open My Computer and choose the CD/DVD burner in which you have loaded the rewritable CD/DVD. Now right click and that drive and select the ÂErase this disc this option.

I used to have the "My Computer" icon on my desktop in XP. Now with W7 I assume I get the same thing by clicking Start and Computer. If that is My Computer (not so labeled) I can't find any "erase this disc".

If I am looking in the right place and not seeing, just tell me to look harder..sorry to be a pain.

P.S. when I right click on the DVD (in my computer) I am offered the option to "format", that starts off fine, sees the DVD, but it fails. I think one try uncovered a disclaimer by W7 about DVD+R, that may be an old technology and we know the disdain MS has for backward compatibility.. albeit they still support CD R/W... I haven't tired my re-write-able CDs, they too are too small for my current need. But I digress...

Yes Mycomputer is changed to computer. There is a link that may help. I am not so talented with this sort of thing either.

Your XP does not understand any DVDs because they were not invented when XP was created so you need third party software. Windows 7 is good with DVDs

I don't think a DVD+R is ever erasable. If you want an erasable DVD it has to be DVD+RW or DVD-RW.

Just a question, why are you using DVD+? I am quite sure your DVD drive recognizes both formats, and DVD- is the more recognized throughout the DVD industry. This could be important if you wish to use disks on other systems or players. It is similar to the once market share of VHS and Betamax.

Since my Vista system is 80+% the same as W7 for your convenience try this: START>on the appearing flyout menu right click on the word Computer>on the appearing drop down menu there should be an entry Show on Desktop>click on the entry and an icon will be placed on the Desktop.

I am using DVD+R to reuse one I have, looking in my physical file I see I have 5 new ones that don't need to be erased. Still I wonder. I purchased these back in 2007, progress may have left them behind.

The label is: DVD RW, DVD+R I should be able to read and write, hum, doesn't say erasable. The mfg is Memorex and proudly proclaims: Recordable, Enregistrable and Grabable the last two of which I have no clue to the meaning. I think I may have purchased them for use in a DVD audio/video recorder.. but that is digital too. I am pretty sure I can stick in my DVD player/recorder (not on the computer) and erase/overwrite..not sure I want to got to the trouble to check.

Thanks for the link to third party DVD software. I'll look there but most likely will just use a new DVD. It lists a 4.7 GByte capacity. Does newer technology hold more? I think the Toshiba script talked about 4.7 GByte (may be the standard still) and two DVDs.

Stopped by Walmart for some "stuff" and looked at their CD/DVD display. I found about equal shelf space allocated to DVD+R and DVD-R, guess +R is alive and well. If purchased in lots of 50, they had a sale for Memorex at 20 cents a disc. I didn't make a purchase as I said I still have 5 unused discs from way back to 2007.

I have not yet given attention to the third party software, I'll do that next.

Back again, sorry for the "goose chase". I pulled the information card on my DVD+R and read:
"This product is a write once disc for use in DVD+RW/+R and DVD+RW Home video recorders" I think I purchased a pack of these when I purchased a DVD play-back/recorder to replace my VHS.

Looking further at the information I find some more information: There is a table where the use: "supplement for a hard drive" is shown for both DVD+RW and DVD-RAM

Indeed I have a DVD+R, not a DVD+RW/R all a bit confusing as the cover shows a "RW" in a shadowed box just above the DVD+R.

Does labeling have to be this complicated?

My growing experience, for any following along.

I burned a DVD using MicroSoft repair tool: Repair Windows 7 64 Bit. It took only 140 megabytes, so it can be put on a lower cost CD. But, DVD prices are not very high either, and a good thing because using the Toshiba recovery tool one needs 5 4.7 Gbyte DVDs. There are 3 Repair discs and one Windows Recovery disc (I have no idea why so much data, all show full use of the 4.7 capacity). Plus another DVD 4.7 Gbits for Toshiba applications and data.

Remember the good old days when a megabyte was a lot of memory? Seems there's a parallel in Washington DC (USA) were dollars are now mentioned only in Billions or Trillions. A million dollars is an insignificant amount...not worth mentioning.
