Personally I like to move them when the tops are beginning to brown. At that point I can easily find them, I just move them like any leafy perennials. I just immediately replanting them wherever I want them to go..... unless it's a tulip. These I prefer to dig up, dry off, and replant in the fall. But just to be clear, the best method for nearly all spring bloomers is to wait till they die back, dig up, dry the bulbs, store dry during the summer and replant in early fall.... (it's just the other method fits into my own schedule better). -unless of course it's a specific bulb that doesn't like to dry off completely. Snowdrops and winter aconite come to mind.

I believe so, it is staying quite warm in our area. That's what I will try for if the ground is workable but if not, any special ways to store the bulbs till the ground is workable in early spring? Thanks so much! ~michael

Wow, that would be overwhelming for anyone! So..what kind if amaryllis are these? Are the 100 of the same kind, so you already know what color they'll be? You have 2 choices in Zone 7, and since it's nearly October you can either store them or plant them. If you plant them, I would try to space them out a bit as the roots can get very tangled when they are crowded, which will make it only a little tougher when you replant them in the spring. I might also trim the leaves back to 10" or so. They likely have long strappy leaves, which will get torn/twisted as you plant them. With shorter leaves they'll be a bit easier to handle. I figure a cut leaf is easier to deal with than a torn leaf. If you plant them, I wouldn't expect them to send up new growth this year (over the next 3 months), unless we have an odd warm autumn! Make sure you mulch them heavily with leaves, etc before the weather turns cold! The alternative is to lay out several layers of newspaper and lay them out where it's cool and dry, to spend the winter. The leaves will die back and they'll go through a dormancy. Then you can plant them exactly where you want them as soon as the danger of frost passes. Good luck! What a great gift! Kristi

Thank you all. We did have warmer weather the past couple of days & I checked my beds where these tulips were to be planted (which has great loose soil & lots of potting soil in it). To my surprise the ground was not frozen and was loose & easy to work up. So, I just planted these numerous bulbs where their home would be and hope they survive. They probably will not bloom well this spring but maybe will do better the next year. I just didn't have the extra soil and didn't want to buy new potting soil to put these into pots, which would probably have been the right thing to do, but I'm just hoping this works. Come up, spring!!
