Amazon Fire HD 10 Question - jn3344?

I posted this question on nini804's cyber Monday deals thread, but thought you might miss it. How did you shut up Alexa? She is completely annoying. I went to settings and turned her off, but she still talks to me every time I boot up the tablet. Then I can't get rid of the Alexa screen. So frustrated.

Alexa Hands-Free Mode

Note: At this time, only Fire HD 10 (7th Generation) with software version 5.5.0.0 supports Alexa hands-free.

After the 5.5.0.0 Fire tablet software update, your Fire HD 10 (7th
Generation) supports Alexa hands-free. To manually check for software
updates, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Settings (gear) icon. Next, tap Device Options and then System Updates. From here, you will see your device’s software version number as well as the option to check for updates.

To enable or disable Alexa hands-free, swipe down from the top of your tablet’s Home screen, tap the Settings (gear) icon, tap Alexa, then tap the switch for Hands-Free Mode.

If you have a PIN or passcode set on your device, certain Alexa
features won’t be available without entering your PIN or passcode. If
you would like to disable Alexa hands-free access when the device is
locked using your PIN or passcode, swipe down from the top of your
tablet’s Home screen, tap the Settings (gear) icon, tap Alexa, and then tap Hands-Free Lock Screen Access.

If you have more than one Alexa-enabled device using the same wake
word, Alexa responds intelligently from the device you're closest to
with ESP (Echo Spatial Perception), and performs the requested task. If
you would like your Fire tablet to respond less frequently when it
senses another Echo device nearby, swipe down from the top of your
tablet’s Home screen, tap the Settings (gear) icon, tap Alexa, and then tap Tablet ESP Behavior.

Thank you, My3dogs. Those are the directions I followed (and confirmed each time I powered up that Alexa is turned off). I have no other Alexa-enabled devices. Ack!

David, for fireblight actinovate is not as effective as copper or streptomycin. I have not tried it due to all the studies not rating it highly enough. For your general question.. first step is to figure out precisely what is causing you problems. For the crabapple, fireblight doesn't defoliate, it causes shoots to bend over and look dead. Defoliation is more likely from a bad case of apple scab. The most common cause of defoliation of plums is bacterial spot, but you need an accurate diagnosis before spraying. If its bacterial spot that is your problem, the Japanese plums are no better than the europeans. Its not so hard to get under control once its diagnosed, just spray copper right before leaves appear in spring and just after they fall off in fall. Every disease is different and requires a different treatment, so step one is get an accurate diagnosis. If you can't figure it out on your own feel free to post some pictures here. Even more generally, if you are not planning on spraying much I would not expect much from apples or plums. I would either switch to figs/persimmons/mulberries, or decide you want the apples and plums and are willing to do half a dozen sprays per year. Scott

For those looking for a "router" for sharing data over cell services, there are additional alternatives to using a USB dongle with a portable router: - A "mobile hotspot", a combined cellular "modem" and router in one small package. Offered by the major carriers. Cost- wise, it's like having another phone, you pay to buy the device and have a (usually 2 year)contract with monthly access and data usage charges. - Most smart phones can operate as a mobile hotspot. Also called "tethering". The advantage with this is that there's nothing additional to buy and (at least with some carriers) no contract is necessary. You can turn it off and on as you wish, and apply usage to the phone plan you already have. The disadvantage is if you're not plugged in, the steady stream of cell data and wifi usage will eat through your battery life. I don't know if a tethered connection can be encrypted. It's convenient for occasional use, with my carrier, it's $ 20 per month prorated for the days it's turned on, so it's like 70 cents per day.

You're always going to find someone who'll lowball the price you've been given just to get the work, espeiclaly in this economy. That said, I've got two contradictory things to say. First, as you've already found out, HD is hit or miss, and I've seen just as many nightmares as I have happy endings. Secondly, the price you've been given really isn't that bad, provided you get what you're paying for. One other thing-- You say you haven't gotten the faucets or sink yet-- you want to make sure that not only do you get those to them before they begin fabrication, but you also want to get a receipt from them that you've handed those pieces to them, so there's no question about it later. As for going directly to the fabricator, they may very well have a no- compete clause with Home Depot just for that reason.

Your tools list made me laugh out loud. Wish you lived in my area. I'd know where to go to borrow toys. I thought this might make you laugh. I am posting a picture of the way my new saw horses (the kind you can take down and store flat) looked when my neighbor Lee returned them. I had bought the brackets, cut the legs and shelves, but never got around to using them. told him not to be careful with them, not to drape tarps over them when he painted the shutters, because I thought sawhorses needed a patina'd history of their use. Told him I was going to paint them pink, but he could use 'em before I got that far. (Pink is NOT my fav, tool color. It is just the color that I thought, if the saw horses were pink, Lee would not ''forget'' to return them!) Anyway, here they are as Lee returned them. Like my dog, they make me laugh. Be careful what you wish for.

Hey sorry I didn't see your question.

Here's the instructions. But what I did was turn off hands free mode. Now she is push to talk and I never get errors. First to turn off (haven't tried this)

If you want to turn the Alexa feature on or off, swipe down from the top of the screen, tap Settings, tap Device Options, then tap the switch for Alexa, (on your 7th Generation Fire HD 10, tap Settings, tap Alexa, then tap the switch for Alexa.)

Next, to turn off hands free:

To enable or disable Alexa hands-free, swipe down from the top of your tablet’s Home screen, tap the Settings (gear) icon, tap Alexa, then tap the switch for Hands-Free Mode.

Just thought of something. Are you turning *off* your tablet? As in off-off? That reboots it. I will look at mine later. Does yours misbehave if it's just in sleep mode?

After using settings to turn Alexa off, yes I did turn the tablet off. When I restarted the tablet, up came Alexa. I checked settings and Alexa was off. When I pressed the home circle I just got a screen saver with nothing on it. I just now turned it off and back on and I got the home screen back with all my apps. Let's see what tomorrow brings.
