Dee - That valance is beautiful! I've never known exactly what to do with the windows in this corner. There are two other windows (one front, one on side) in the front of the room. jterrilynn - there are TOO many directions to go in. And I like lots of different things! I also think that it can be hard to judge things from pictures, especially my bad ones. For instance, my walls are much much darker and yellow-y IRL. I will post pics but I am afraid people will just shake their heads and say "Those poor chairs, and we all did our best to help that crazy woman". As I wait for the squiggle sample to arrive, I've been researching squiggles. According the the dictionary, the word wasn't used as a noun until 1902. But I've seen fabric from the mid-1800s with whatever they were called back then. I've found jewelry from the 1930s and fabric from various time periods. As I've been looking at all this fabric is surprising how much of it seems so modern-looking. It's interesting that we often have a very wrong idea of what is "historic" Completely OT, but our state capitol building here in Maryland has a dome that's been painted white for nearly 200 years. Hi, I've been to the Long Island Kravet Furniture showroom, which is in the same building as Kravet's home office. Sales people there will help you with any fabric you're interested in putting on their furniture, and boy do they have a lot of fabric offerings!! They'll also quote retail price, but tell you to speak to your designer about the price. We were able to go by ourselves, just signed in with the name of the upholstery shop and the contact there. This was over a year ago & I can't remember what other fabric swatches lined the walls at the showroom as I was mainly interested viewing the Barbara Barry-designed fabrics & several sofas and chairs. I zoomed right over to a huge feature wall with large samples of all of her fabrics. Felt like I was in heaven! Local design centers, custom upholstery and window teatment workrooms, as well as interior designers, should also have Kravet books. A local custom upholstery shop offered wholesale prices should I order Kravet Furniture through them. Also, I got a quick peek at the Kravet wholesale price list a few months back, and the designer discounts were in the range of 34% to 50%, higher discounts for more expensive fabrics & also for purchases of four yards or more. For example, a $129/yard fabric had wholesale price of $74.50/yard ($67.05 if ordering four yards or more). Michelle

Does the chair you show have only one hind leg? I would think that would make it more difficult to move these chairs around. Also, I would think these chairs would be heavy to maneuver, especially by children and older people. I like the first pattern you show, and I don't think that you need to match colors from one area to another exactly. The mind will perceive them as separate rooms. At the same time I would wonder whether there isn't an overuse of this color, since it is a rather strong one. You might consider a beige material instead or beige with a subtle teal pattern,

Party, I have a very similar chair that belong to my great-grandmother (at least it looks to be similar from the arms of your chair). I am not big on rocking chairs so I let my sister use it - with the knowledge that IT BELONGS TO ME if I want it back LOL!! I had it upholstered years ago. Of course, the upholster guy gave me help on the fabric. I would order a sample of the fabric and see what you think before purchasing yardage. I do think something less busy and more fitting with the time period of your chair might look better. Good luck! I have covered chair seats before also but that is not upholstering. I can't image doing much more!! I'm in awe! Oakley I like your chair. I have a set of white (painted) vintage chairs with the cane back for sell right now. I bought them from the gal who has painted a couple of pieces of furniture for me. I intended to use them with my dining room table, but never did. However, I recently found a set of vintage oak (stained) chairs that look great with my pedestal dining table. I do, however, have to cover 6 chair pads!! I have some samples on the way. ETA: Party, I like the second fabric much better. Again, I would order a sample. I would also want to make sure the scale of the pattern for the chair. Oakley, have you considered dark wax on your chair? It would bring out all the carvings, nooks & crannies. I love dark wax!! I have a chair to get to my painter, a wood armchair with beautiful carvings. Will look great with dark wax. I can't decide what color for her to paint the chair though!!
