Windows and doors. Oh my!
From the Nov 2017 thread - I FINALLY am ready to install my windows and doors. I've had them in storage for 4 years. Rented a lull/ extending boom 36' forklift to unload them - they were crated like Ft Knox, and shipped from Austria via ocean freight. We had 4 flatbed trucks (24' each)
Here are the PassivHaus certified front doors in the crate, with the stainless tubular handles. Wow - these things are monsters!
More pictures of the PassivHaus windows tomorrow. I THINK I have checked every window and door - but need to double check (of course it's too late now!)
But the quality of these things is phenomenal.
We also got the 6 garage doors for the 2 buildings - they are about 3" thick, and all the mounting hardware is mostly assembled / engineered for our installation. They also have some amazing seals - unlike the floppy things that frame doors in the US. I'll try to get some pics - hoping to get most of them installed over the rest of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Comments (23)I have to second Rose. 1)If you are not bored and annoyed by modern construction, do not buy an old house. 2) Live in your 'new to you' old house for a year and learn how it works (circulation, privacy, ventilation,etc.), what it needs ( new electrical, furnace, or roof?) and how your lives have changed because of how you live in the house. In our current old house where we assumed the patio should be was wrong - beautiful view, but too much wind, too far away from comings and goings to suit our lifestyle. Your house may have wonderful sunshine in its living spaces (all those windows), cross ventilation in the summer (all those doors), mouldings that make you smile (that you can only reproduce today at vast expense), proportions that ease your soul. You may find you don't use the formal spaces as they were intended, but that a 'front parlor' can be your 'family room'. The mechanical systems may need help - you should be able to improve them without damage to the character of your house. All houses need attention - the rule of thumb is to expect to spend 1/40 of a house's value every year on maintenance. Often houses have been let go, and then the new owner needs to put in much more. Comments (4)No, installations don't always match exactly in the way the detailing of the boards is cut, although they should be of the same general style (traditional, contemporary, etc.). There are actually different pieces for different purposes -- baseboard trim, chair rail trim, crown moulding trim, door and window trim. There are a variety of styles to choose from. HD or Lowes probably stocks the most popular types without special order. You'll probably find them in sets as far as styling goes. Pictures, pictures, pictures will show you how things are put together and just how much it all varies. Look to see what type of detailing you like and how wide of a trim appeals to you. Of course, if you like really wide trim, it may not look right in your particular space! So you have to take all things into consideration. Comments (11)Thank you for the suggestions everyone. We just order light filtering honeycomb shades, bottom-up top-down for 19 windows. Housegal200, thank you for the picture and idea. Once we are moved in I may add curtains that stack entirely on the side. I'm starting a new conversation next above curtains for a double slider. :)...See Morejust_janni
