Exterior Color Choice - Help
Comments (3)I think you should go with the Thistle! Red and green are beautiful together and a red brick next to a barely green grey would be pretty. I would definitely keep it light though so it doesn't blend in with the brick. pretty house!...See MoreHelp with roof choice
Comments (17)Well, the way I look at it is that it's like paint. The cost of the paint (or shingles) in a a paint (or roof) job is piddly compared to the cost of the labor. So you want to get the best paint (or shingles) you can so that it will last a good long time before you have to outlay for the labor to repaint/reroof. The camelots not only look great, but they're thick and heavy and have a better wind rating and warranty than regular shingles. IMO, they're worth the extra cost (but then again, I'm kinda biased, LOL!) I think you see enough of your roof that it will make a cosmetic difference. Your roof also doesn't seem to be overly huge, so hopefully the cost difference won't be staggering in "real money" terms. One thing you may want to check on is that the camelots are very very heavy - much heavier than regular architectural shingles. This means they'll last longer, but you want to make sure your roof can support it. Most modern roofs are fine, but yours looks like an older house - you may want to ask your roofer to be sure. When we reroofed, we went from shake (which are very light) to an entire layer of 3/4" plywood plus the camelots. Our roof is fine so far, but we do hear a lot more "cracking/settling" type noises than we ever did before - guess the house is adjusting to the extra weight....See MoreI'm horrible with colour - help on the roof choice, please
Comments (2)I think the green might be limiting if you ever want to change the shutter color (although like you, I think the color is perfect.) I would do the dark grey....See MorePlease Help: Color Choices for 1970s Mansard & Exterior Refresh
Comments (24)We're ready to start planning our project in earnest and aren't sure the order in which we should do the work or how many different types of contractors we need. I'd appreciate any insights you can give. We hope to use the mockup @ourfarmhouse made for us as our goal (see below). Our exterior projects include: New roof in grey, which will require changing the color of the gutters, etc. Architectural elements, such as the columns at the front entry and on the upper dormer windows, and new shutters Painted front door and garage doors (instead of replacing them, for now) Repaired/repaved asphalt drive way 27'x14' concrete patio has a large crack down the entire length that will need repaired, and we're thinking about a decorative finish like acid-staining This same 27'x14' covered patio will be screened-in, and the existing posts might need replaced or refinished; will be changing from brown posts and ceiling to a color that coordinates with the new grey roof. What types of professionals do we need and/or which types of professionals can be used for multiple projects? For example, can we get by with a roofer (roof/gutters), asphalt/concrete company (driveway/patio), and carpenter (architectural elements, screened porch, painting door/garage door, and hanging shutters)? Is there an advantage to using a general contractor? What order should we follow? Thank you!...See MoreAndrew Fryer
