We used two windows in our shower. They are non-opening, because I didn't want screens in the shower, but I guess operable would work. Although the rest of the windows in our house are coated wood frame, we got plain vinyl windows here. Seemed better for the wet area. We installed them normally, then butted the cement board up to them. Our shower was waterproofed using a topical roll-on/trowel-on membrane called Hydroban, which is applied after the cement board. This stuff is fabulous. it was painted all the way over to lap onto the windows (and plumbing extrusions) creating a watertight seal there. Then, after tiling, the gap between the tile and window frame is caulked. But since water gets below tile and grout, using Hydroban is a good way to ensure water doesn't get into the framing. I should also mention that the flat area below the window (the "sill" area) was sloped very slightly to ensure no water collects there. We also squeegee that spot lightly after showering, when we do the glass doors. It's only been a year, so I have no long-term experience, but, in theory, it seems like it will be just fine! (And it's so lovely having the natural light in the shower!)

I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. Well, mine has nothing to do with natural lighting. It's a 100 year old farmhouse, and the bathroom in question is on the first floor, so to vent it all the way through to the roof wouldn't really work, unless I had a vent fan something akin to that which you might find in a fast food restaurant's kitchen! LOL Also, because of the way the bathroom is arranged, as well as the other areas around it, there's no way I could really set the bathroom up any other way and move the tub/shower combo to another part of the room, so I'm pretty much stuck with what I have, and it's more a matter of making sure when I redo that area that I make it water tight to the frame of the window. Here are a few pics of the bathroom as it is right now: Now, as you can see, that's a brand new recessed vinyl clad window in there-- What I'll do is Kerdi the tub enclosure and then seal the Kerdi to the frame of the window, and that should seal it up tight.

This is what we're hoping to do. It *looks* like it doesn't have a curb. Or maybe it does? The gal at our local flooring/tile company says that it's doable because of the size - a smaller area would need a curb.I don't know..this thing doesn't need to be wheelchair accessible. But I really do like the look of a tiled shower rather than a prefab stall. If it won't be cost prohibitive? The other thing - we're doing a bear theme in this bathroom (we've got bears on our property) and found some *great* bear tiles that we can use as accents in the shower. If we tile it, that is.
