What does maintenance mean in Foliage Pro application rate?
Comments (3)I've been using the FoliagePro for a couple of months now, and I noticed a big difference between two containers, one of which has nasturtiums and bronze fennel, and another which has nasturtiums, ornamental oregano, and lemongrass. The nasturtiums in the latter container are lush and blooming well; the nasturtiums in the former container are scrawny, with yellow leaves and infrequent blooms, and the bronze fennel is dying at the tips. I know I was giving less FoliagePro fertilizer to the scrawny ones, but when I gave them more, nothing happened. Now I remember having given the pot with the oregano some organic fertilizer, 3-1-2 alfalfa meal. I sprinkled some on the scrawny ones and will keep you posted. I would note that it is VERY finely divided, almost a powder, so I'm hoping it will eventually go out through the screen on the bottom. I am watering all containers the same, and all drain well. I can put a finger down into the mix and just feel the barest moisture at the fingertip, and then I still don't water if nothing is wilting or it looks like rain....See MoreSo what exactly does 'water consistently' mean?
Comments (1)The confusion usually results from good old semantics - interpreting the same word differently. "Presuming" which is something we all do. The goal is NOT to "water consistently" but to maintain consistent soil moisture levels. But that doesn't mean water everyday or water once a week or give it the same 2 gallons each day at 10 am, unless the soil the plant is in needs it. In other words, you have to first check out the soil before you water. Stick your finger deep into the soil. If it is cool and slightly damp, no water is needed...right now. Check again later. Some times the plant may need water 3x a day, some times if it has been raining regularly only once in 2 weeks. Some days it may need 1 gallon, some days 2 1/2 gallons divided into 2 applications. This is one reason why a drip irrigation system set on slow drip and an auto timer is so great! :) Is it in a container or in the ground, if a container how big, variety, stage of growth, where is it in the feeding cycle, weather, age of plant, type of soil, etc. etc. All those variables affect how much water and when. Bottom line there is no magical formula for watering and you can't make up one. Well, with one exception - too much water is worse than too little. The plant's appearance and the dirt the plant is growing in will tell you if it needs water. Look at the plant and stick your finger deep into it before watering and when in doubt - don't water. Comments (6)Thanks everyone for the input. I sprayed them both with Murphys Oil soap diluted with water - hope that was the right thing to do. My county extension service said the treatment for mites was to spray with "horticultural soap," which I could buy at Lowe's or make my own. So I used Murphy's since I had read about others' using it. I have nothing to lose since they are quickly on their way out. I thought mites was a problem that the west coast/dry climates had to deal with and that it was not an issue in an extremely humid environment! Well, we'll see what happens. If I can salvage just one of them I will be happy. Oh, I think I could see the tiniest of specks on the undersides of leaves which came off when sprayed. If they were mites, they were really hard to see (didn't have a strong magnifying glass). And I see webs all the time, but thought thay was just spiders since they're everywhere. (I still wonder if there will be a worm in the tomato when I cut it open!) :-)...See MoreWhat does it mean to "follow" people here?
Comments (17)I've found myself 'following' people by mistake, too. If you scroll over someone's username, the first box will be either be blank, or say 'follow'--if you allow followers. If you have followers, the next box will tell how many. If I click on that box it tells me who they are. Debrak, you have 3 followers and you are following 4 people. I do not have following enabled or 'allowed' which sounds kind of snooty, lol. It has to be checked in your privacy section of advanced settings in your profile. I assumed it was to let us keep track of members our friends are following--if I like your style, I might also like the styles of those you follow. Your page gives me the option to follow the same members you are following. I noticed that if I click on 'activity', on the left side of my profile page is a list of my recent activity, threads I've started, and my comments on other threads. I don't think that's been available all along, but have no idea when it was added....See MoreDLM2000-GW
