Growing Tomatoes

Does this mean what I think it means? (pics)

I have a German Queen which is dying. I picked one blushed tomato today and am hoping the other two greenies make it to blush stage before the plant totally goes down. I trimmed most of the bad leaves off it, so it's almost naked except for the few remaining yellowed leaves. The stems are fine. One of the fruits has some little spots on it. But I couldn't diagnose it from the resources here, maybe it's just unhappy or rootbound or something I can't figure out.

Anyway, when I picked my one blushed GQ, it looks like this on the bottom. The scar does not bother me, but does the hole mean that there's a worm inside? I realize I'll find out when I cut it open, but the top side is still quite green, so it's not quite time yet.

My Cherokee Purple, which is right next to the GQ, has the same issue, but not quite as severe (it has more leaves left), and also has a few fruit of which I hope to get at least one ripened.

So, I'll stop rambling.

Do I have a worm in my GQ, and any idea what the disease is with these plants? Thanks.

the worm probably ate what it wanted and moved on

the glare on the fruit is a little much but I suspect bird or stinkbugs (or both). Sometimes the birds damage fruit going after the fruitworms.

Hard to tell the disease problems. Since you're in NC Ill take a wild guess that one GQ might have fusarium but it could also just be nutritional defn. It looks like some mold/mildew on the CP leaf (maybe LB but I doubt it if you arent in the mountains)

Check the back sides of the leaves with a magnifying glass for tiny bugs. That looks like spider mite damage.

lol, Ladybanks is mega huge and will eat up a house, lol! yeah, I too would be too scared to plant Ladybanks in a pot. And yeesh that is going to be a major endeavor. Luckily there's very little thorns? Luckily for me, hybrid tea climbers can get large, but they don't eat houses. Maybe their blooms are just too heavy and large to reach the massive proportions like other types of roses do (New Dawn Wichurana being another example or some of the ancient OGRs). I do have Ghislaine de Feligonde, however, so who knows how big it will get, lol! YIKES! and yes it will be in a 30 gallon pot. wuh-oh! Ironically the other hybrid tea climbers are in much larger containers 122 gallons but I don't think any will be as massive as Ghislaine perhaps? I don't know--I am very new to OGRs. This will be my first time trying to grow them (fingers triple-crossed)!

What does surface type mean on tile ? i.e. 0.60, .73, vitreous

It means their website is a mess. If you look at the specifications of the tiles listed under 0.6, 0.71 and 0.73 the "answers" don't match up with the "category". For example "Actual Width" and they list "Not Rated". It's not you, it is the website. If you want tile that is not slippery, then you need to pay attention to the Coefficient of Friction, both dry and wet.

The wedding is in a church and the reception at a country club at the very northern end of the beach--the name escapes me but it's like Carilou or something close to that. The reception is inside the club but will probably spill out onto the patios by the beach. LOL Barb--I bet they all are wondering. I think a sun dress with a short-sleeved bolero type jacket or sweater (for church) would work with some strappy sandals with a small heel. It will probably be pretty hot, if we ever stop raining, that is. Yes msmarion, she has a really cute white sun dress with an emerald jacket she was going to wear but now white is out. My sister said she couldn't wear that because white was for virgins. I told her if that was the case, wedding dresses would all be pastels. But I've been to many weddings where lots of people wore black. I love the beach, too, Glenda. DH's son was married in November, 2006 on the beach with the most beautiful sunset you've ever seen. He was 44 at the time and had never married. He'd been waiting for his HS sweetheart and when she became available he was ecstatic. I've never seen a happier groom. He actually jumped in the air after the "I do's". Life was good for him, at last. Less than a year later, he died in his sleep. Was a such a bad time for us, I couldn't even talk about it, but we're mellowing a little.

If it were spider mite damage, at this point you would see small the small webbing of the mites. Spider mites are not spiders, but when they really get on a plant in large numbers they crate a weblike material where the leaf meets the stem and where the leaf stem meets the main stem.

If it is spide mites use seaweed. Spray both the top and bottom of the leaves with seaweed and watch the mites go away. I am not sure this is spider mites though, but it cannot hurt to try.

For a fellow NC diagnosis.... probably spider mites. Had/have 'em on my potted plants on the deck, and the foliage looks the same.

Thanks everyone for the input. I sprayed them both with Murphys Oil soap diluted with water - hope that was the right thing to do. My county extension service said the treatment for mites was to spray with "horticultural soap," which I could buy at Lowe's or make my own. So I used Murphy's since I had read about others' using it.

I have nothing to lose since they are quickly on their way out.

I thought mites was a problem that the west coast/dry climates had to deal with and that it was not an issue in an extremely humid environment!

Well, we'll see what happens. If I can salvage just one of them I will be happy. Oh, I think I could see the tiniest of specks on the undersides of leaves which came off when sprayed. If they were mites, they were really hard to see (didn't have a strong magnifying glass). And I see webs all the time, but thought thay was just spiders since they're everywhere.

(I still wonder if there will be a worm in the tomato when I cut it open!) :-)
