To wood, or not to wood ceilings? Will it look low?
I am thinking of wooding my ceilings but after seeing pictures of flat ceilings, not vaulted, I'm worried it'll make the ceiling look super low and the room small. My ceilings are 9ft tall so taller than standard but I'm not sure that'll make a difference. Also my floors are wood and my trim is stained wood also. 1. Is this too much wood? (walls are beige)
2. Is there a way to wood the ceilings that it wont look low like a certain stain color or something?
3. since it's higher than normal, I've seen ceilings that the ceiling is wooded on the actual height in the middle and about a foot from the wall drops down and slants about a foot to make a semi vault look (I don't know what it's actually called) but would that help it look tall? (pictures below, one sort of shows what I'm trying to describe but i want just the wood plants, no beams and not that steep of a drop.) Second picture is the sort of theme/style I'm going for in my bedrooms, the lodge style so wood everywhere is perfect and in my opinion you can never have enough wood haha just concerned about the ceiling when it's not vaulted. Picture 3 is my room. It's 15x15 and a beige colored paint, 9ft high ceilings 2 2x6 on one wall that my bed is between and one 5x6 window on the other wall.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI had an oringinal 1920 pine ceiling in the kitchen in our old house. The ceiling was about 9' too and never thought it looked low.
Maybe try to incorporate some elements that enhance height when decorating. Maybe bring the curtain rods closer to the celiling?

Comments (17)annab, I love my Wolf AG, but there is 1 issue that bug me a bit: for really small pots, the high flame seems to hit the outer edge so the stuff inside seems to get hit from the sides. Not an issue for medium size pots though. The medium and low flames are fine... The grates get kinda spattered, but I throw em in the dishwasher from time to time. The black flat parts (under the grates) get a little streaky, but generally are easy to keep clean -- its also a little hard for me to judge, you may want to ask my cleaning service :) It does stay fairly clean in between their visits though. Comments (20)Thank you all. Either painting the ceiling or the cabinets would be the easiest way to avoid too much brown wood everywhere. (I actually rather like modern high gloss lacquered cabinets.) White paint with a slight blue tint on the ceiling with walnut stained beams sounds quite pretty. However, my DH hates painted wood. Given the choice, he would much rather go with tile floors than paint the ceilings or the cabinets. The wood ceiling doesn't look too bad as is in the photo I posted. I like the depth of the color it is now - not too dark and overpowering - but the tone of the color is the problem. At certain times of day, as the light changes, the ceiling takes on an unattractive pinking or yellowish cast. One of our big problems in the house is lack of lighting, so we are adding as much as we can during the remodel, including cove lighting on top of the cabinets (we can�t do any recessed lighting because there is no space between the wood ceiling and the roof), so the wood ceiling will become more of a feature with the lights aimed at it. Our contractor is supposed to do samples to see if we can dye the ceiling to a more neutral brown shade, without going much darker. We could try to do a greyish tone, like driftwood or aged teak, but that will probably be harder to achieve successfully over a large area than a brown tone. There are little wing walls that separate the kitchen from the dining/living area, so we could do separate flooring in each space. I do not mind using tile in the kitchen, it is the living room that concerns me. I agree that the trick to using multiple woods in one space is to vary the tones and textures, but they still must be complementary. We could leave the ceiling lighter, like it is, and use darker wood floors in the living room, but the furniture in that room is a mix of pecan stained cherry and teak, with medium-dark brown leather couches. I will buy a new contemporary styled rug in lighter tones (creams and blues most likely) no matter what we choose for flooring. In the kitchen, we are using white quartzite counters, stainless appliances and some glass doors in cabinets, so that will break up the brown wood. I still think wood floors in the kitchen at least will be too much with the cabinets and ceiling. I am really torn between lighter or darker walnut cabinets because I love both looks. Comments (27)I just saw that I was mentioned re: metal roofs and yes I do try to talk my clients out of them because we had one on a house we bought. We hated it. If not carefully designed with proper snow guards and heating they can be a serious safety risk. Google "killed by falling snow". With my rant about metal roofs over it appears the design is with flat roofs. Metal roofing is not recommended for that application and would be a total waste of money since it wouldn't be visible. I love the look of the weathered IPE above. I also use a lot of Alura and Hardie. You have to be really close to either product to tell it's not painted wood. Comments (2)Paint the end wall. That's actually a very modern look, quite popular right now. People are taking out attics all over the place for a higher ceiling/higher utility bill/less storage. Painting the ceiling and leaving the beams wood is also trendy at the moment....See Moreashley

6 years agoThese are pretty rooms but feel low to me like you'd want to duck when you walked in haha so it scared me that I'd spend all that time and get the wood up and it feel that way.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agorebeccamomof123 my "worry" is actually doing too much LOL (not really a worry, you can never do too much wood, in my opinion, but other people don't agree) my door and floor trim are wood and my floors are wood and so are my window sills. I didn't do wood window frames because I was scared I was doing too much but it's supposed to be woodsy and lodgey feeling so now I'm thinking I didn't do enough, now that I've actually lived in for 4 weeks. I find myself wanting more wood. Just wasn't sure if that would like a good add in or like a, holy crap that's a lot, kinda thing hahaha but I think I am going to go for it. I want to wood the vaulted ceiling in my living room and the vaulted ceiling my kitchen but there's a flat ceiling in the dining and the foyer (the way the roof had to be for there to be 2 separate vaults) so you think those will be ok wooded and not the flat part? ( i wasn't going to do uppers on the other side of the kitchen until I lived in it and decided it needed them, so it looks funny here without appliances LOL)

6 years agoI did a reclaimed wood in herringbone on my vaulted ceiling (it's under my name in my projects) and I also did a much smaller project in one of the bedrooms! It's only a 8' ceiling and I put up bamboo T&G flooring. Oh, I forgot,,I did french oak flooring in my bathroom reno. but that's vaulted too. but he smaller bedroom is nice and cozy w/the ceiling done. With your 9' ceiling, don't worry about it looking low. it won't.
do the tongue and groove, wide plank flooring if you can. it's easier. use a finishing nailer and adhesive. we did that w/the french oak flooring on the bathroom

6 years agoAnother look could be shiplap painted white and add beams in the same stain as your floor. The rustic lodge can still be achieved by your choice of accessories and will keep the room feeling larger and brighter.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoashley, we did the construction adhesive on the back, and a few finishing nails (super tiny holes w/a pneumatic nailer) in each board.
this is the small room we did about 10 years ago w/the bamboo. (back then it wasn't a thing, but bamboo was, so I picked that). 8' ceilings
(I'm in the middle of painting and of course, ran out of paint!) this was also done w/the adhesive and a nailer. the crown hides the edges. If you're really good, you won't need to do edging. By the time we got to this ceiling, we were pros and didn't have to do any edging
