I know "nobody wants brown" anymore, but that's your homes identity, and it's gorgeous.

You just bought it recently....

Well, pictures can be deceptive, but that house seems pretty light and bright to me. I'd be inclined to change out the floors as planned, repaint the walls, think about changing out those light fixtures, and leave the dark trim and the window coverings for a later day.

You house is beautiful! I have also bought a house that isn't really my style and I need to grow into it too. I would paint out the crown moulding and paneling white and keep the floors. They are really nice. And any art should not be brown or dark (like the wrought iron piece, the clock, and the above mantle piece). I think if you do this the kitchen and floors will look great.

Thank you all. First off let me clarify that we do love the house and its character. That's why we bought it in the first place! It's just an over abundance of chocolate brown that we were hoping to address. Also the pictures of the home are as it was staged for the sale, so all furniture and wall decor will be gone. The only things that will remain are the window blinds and the fan/light fixtures.

Beth, thank you for the detailed suggestions. Great suggestion about the counter stools and non brown furniture. Do you have any pics as suggestions that works well with our cabinets and flooring?

Also, can you elaborate a little on your thoughts on the Dining area.

You mentioned that you would like to keep the brown crown molding there, but change out the wainscoat (wall paneling)?

Right now, the wainscoat(which I call wall paneling), the baseboard, window trims and the crown molding are all the exact same shade of brown. What would you change them to?

I am adding one more picture of the dining area. The wall paneling is also in the entire hallway, this picture shows more of it.

nogel,,,is this dining room 'it's own room'? or does it blend w/another space? if isolated, I was thinking that the dark crown is actually nice w/the color walls and works w/the wainscot. I though they might be actually wood, but its just paint. Is this your furniture or previous shot of sellers?

I don't care for brown, so I would paint the wainscot, regardless. I like a black and white look, but it's on the dramatic side for some people. you could do blue, green, white,,,basically anything depending on what you want.

So, if keeping all the brown, then this style works. If you want to bring in lighter and brighter items, then go ahead and paint the crown and molding to the white. That's a ton of painting!

What exactly is it that you want? colors? furniture type? what are you looking to accomplish?

Hi Beth, thank you so much for all the ideas. We are leaning towards your 3rd and 4th picture. How do you think the wainscot would look with the same color as well? Or should we be thinking of doing something different with that?

To answer your questions, the pictures are of the staged home, with items from the previous owner and some staged items. Everything will go except for the window shades and the light fixtures.

The Dining area is actually part of a Dining+Living area right off the entrance with a hallway on the side. The entire hallway has the identical wainscot. Here are two pictures that cover the entire dining+living area. One of our original thinking was to take the white color of that one (and only) non-brown window in living, and apply it to all trim, baseboard, crown molding and the wainscot... and leave the walls as is.

We are mainly looking for colors. We do have to get new furniture for family room as well, and we do really want to buy matching flooring to extend into this Dining+Living area.

Gorgeous home. the finishes are beautiful. Interesting to see what furniture you decide to get. That Tuscan style isn't my first choice either.

I don't think you can go wrong w/the white trim/baseboards/crown. If you do the white wainscot, white walls and trim, then hopefully you can bring some color in rugs, art, pillows, etc. What I'm really liking recently, is soft blush pinks w/white, some gold and silver. gray leather sofas, marble accents, soft wood,,

tufted sofas, black and white prints,

But with the white, I also love some dark wood elements. keeps the white from looking too sterile

What is your style as far as furniture?

this one is a lot of white! its nice, but I'd have to bring in a fiddle leaf fig tree, some other plants, and maybe a velvet accent chair in turquoise or pale lilac.

ngoel_hz, although our houses are very different, we also have lots of very noticeable trim in our house, including rosettes over doors, a couple of pillars, etc. When we purchased the house, the walls were taupe and the trim was cream. I wanted light and bright, but was struggling with what to do about the trim. @Beth H. and @Flo Mangan encouraged me to opt for the same colour of white on walls and trim (BM Oxford White), with just a difference in sheen between walls and trim. It's gorgeous! We haven't lost any of the nice architectural details the trim provides, but the overall look of the house is so much fresher and airier.
