First freeze -- new shrub watering needs over winter

Hi everyone

So I have newly planted (they've been in the ground 2 months?). Skip Laurel, Prague Viburnum and a Red Bud tree. I am in zone 6b/7 (southern 'north nj'). Clay soil. Easily 'ponds' when I water

I know that, just because it gets cold out there, I shouldnt think that watering duties are over :).

I had soaker hoses around each plant. I plan on removing those today (due to the cold..). My question is: how do i know when I need to water the shrubs? Its 40s/low 50s during the day, 20s-low 30s at night.

Also, what is the best mechanism for winter watering? Do I just leave the naked hose end at the base of each and let it 'flood'? Do I get a watering can and dump water at the base? How many cans per plant?

Can you tell I am a newbie? :)

Thanks in advance for any and all advice

K
