Excuse me a minute while I vent
Comments (13)Vent away! I'd have been livid! Though I doubt my dad wouldn't have dared such an intrusion... or had the time or desire to tackle extra yard work! My next door neighbor has a beautiful lawn and garden, and she has an entire bed of milkweed out back. It is a great and regular pleasure for us to go out back in the summer, accompanied or not by her children and their friends, and inspect the milkweed for Monarch caterpillars. We also grow extra herbs so that both we and the other caterpillars who like them (esp. the dill!) have all that we want. I had planned a rose garden in the moderately sunny spot near her kids' swing set, but images of them tangling with the thorns made me re-consider and go with a butterfly garden instead. The butterflies make me happier than the roses would have... Perhaps you need a folksy hand-painted sign to tuck into your milkweed. Something like "Monarch Nursery: No weed whackers allowed!" or "Shhhhh! Baby Monarchs Sleeping!" or something similar to point out the fact that the plants are both intentional and cherished. Eighty peonies? Lopping off a hydrangea you'd nursed from a cutting? All your daylilies? Ladies, it's beyond me how you aren't all posting from prison after having murdered the whack-a-doodles! Steve and I have strict divisions of labor and he knows better than to "help" with my stuff. The price I pay is that the edging we bury to separate his turf from mine is inviolable... which means any flowers that grow outside the line (or just lean heavily) get whacked. Grrr. Although as time goes by, he's becoming less zealous about whacking errant blooms (and I'm becoming better about re-homing volunteers who come up too close to the line...)...See MoreOk, I sinned, sinned, and sinned again! I am bad. Please forgive
Comments (28)Howdy, Rose..a good excuse, but only two??? lol. Last night we went to HD and of all stores, Walgreens. Bought 2 plants at HD, Thanksgiving Cactus and bi-colored flower Cyclamen. BUT: We stopped at Walgreens for aspirin. Wouldn't you know it..adjacent the checkout counter stood a small table w/plants. At first look, they were common, but then, before I was about to walk away, there were two succulents. Ironically, while browsing Ebay yesterday, I came across a similar if not the same succulent as the one at Walgreen's. So, I bought one, though should have got both..Not a common succulent.. The outer ceramic, no-drainge container was made in Germany.. Oh, HD's plants were floating in water..A shame! Rose, I promise you..every room, even though there are plants, have furniture.. Last week we had installed LR carpet. Dh and DS hauled the desk, 'which used to hold a computer,' in the garage. Since we no longer keep a computer on the desk, I might ditch the desk. Might be nice for my tall, D. Marginata. lol. Hey Purple. Yep, Hoyas were Dead, Dead. I feel so bad. If it hadn't been for my knee plants would have been in a lot sooner. Yep, I learned a lesson...Hoyas cannot tolerate freezing temps and frozen rain. Although thick-leaf types did better, several leaves had dropped..many remaining are frost-bitten..so I have to remove a few leaves everyday..though not as many as before. Thank God! Mike..is the sun out there? Will your pics come out clear or dark? It's gloomy here, but temps are in the 60's. Still, too dark to snap a pic..I might try. Hey Purple, you and I have the same driving rules..speed unless the police are around..Great rule. I didn't know there were two people who had this right!...See MoreOrchids I saved! Does this atone for my sins? Look friends:-)
Comments (13)Oh my goodness! Hello everyone! So sorry I was delayed:-(. It's been a rough week and thank goodness for you all here and my plants, or I would of slitted my throat. Life stinks at times, but then there is always good things to think of once you get through all the fog and see clrearly again:-0) Kemistry: That is the one scent that I could never explain! There is nothing quite like it and that is why I bought two. I actually use to get them at Logee's and would loose them constantly to disease. But I managed to talk my this nursery into selling unusual stuff and he has managed to pull it off. He is expanding to better things that can only be baought there and his way of thanking me was to give me them:-) If you should ever want one, let me know and I can either get you one or start cuttings. They are sooo easy to root! Rosey, like giving up cigarrettes for some people, those methods won't work for me..lol The only thing that will stop me from wanting to aquire any more is to feel overwhelmed with bugs, and thank goodness I think I know how to avoid them babies! Disease, another issue. I know not to get too much so that there is no room for them to breathe, let alone get light.lol I will always have a soft spot for weak and abused plants. Toni, YES, your fault. Remember when we talked and you said you sinned again? Well, I ran to Lowes that night and wondered if I might find something out of the ordinary, and I did. In fact, I blame Annie too..lol It was her that found some just like mine and encouraged me to get a good deal like she had. I even showed the store her post on getting the same plants for 2:50 and it worked.lol The blad stick I break into very small pieces. It's tree fern and the Hydroton is used for air space. It's great stuff. I can water my orchids all I want without fear of rot. Heck, I'll bet if you started a thread on your own about the new bunch of plants or sins that you have done, everyone will balme you too..lololol Hoping everyone is safe and happy tonight! Comments (9)I think Marcolo is right. It's probably only a very few things that cause the problem. I've had 6 people working in my kitchen with only a few 'scuse mes. In my old kitchen, no matter what, there was no way to have more than one person in the work area without them having to move over because they were totally in the way. In the current one, it's just a can I reach in there for a sec kind of thing. Partly that's drawers instead of doors, I think, but partly it is from organization. One thing that helps is that the optimal place to stand for prep at the island is in front of my fridge drawers, and for all that they're great, they don't need a lot of opening. You could replicate that by putting less used things where the prep chef's belly is. My secondary island positions are on the ends, and, especially the sink end, also don't need getting in much. The other end just has wraps, junk, boards and racks. Not high demand. There's enough room at the clean-up sink for the washer not to be in anyone's way, and the work area there is above the DW. By stacking used prep dishes in the least used corner, on the other side of the sink, the DW doesn't have to be opened while someone is working there. I try to pull out any pretty bowls and pie plates that I'll need for serving from the baking area before the cooking starts, so the baking counter is more available. There are wooden spoons in both the baking utensils drawer and the under cooktop drawer. There are some odd flatware pieces in the baking utensils drawer, for stirring, tasting, spreading, etc., so that kitchen flatware doesn't have to be fetched from the far side of the kitchen. There are mixing bowls in the island and the baking area, and also Pyrex pie plates in both. There are small prep bowls on both sides of the main prep area, so accessible to everyone. The only things I bought extra for this doubling was a couple of table knives to be put in the baking drawer. The forks and spoons are from my college set but those knives are weird. I got a couple of heavy duty ones, with good spreading blades, in open stock at the Corning outlet. The other things I just salted around a little. Maybe this kind of process would work for you? Designating undisturbed stuff for the standing areas and spreading things around a bit?...See Morenikthegreek
