What are some good orchids to add as my 2nd orchid.
Comments (26)Seasun, a south window is great, but 5 feet away is too far. You are not giving your phal enough light and it will decline into death if you leave it where it is. Orchids take some time to die, so you'll think you're doing fine, doing ok, maybe not growing like it should. Oh NO!!! What happened to my beautiful orchid???? Here's how where to put the phal figures: phals need about 1000 footcandles of light to grow and bloom. *Outside* at high noon = app 10,000 FC. You are never getting anything near that indoors because of the ceiling and roof of the house cutting off that directly overhead sun. All you are getting is the slanting sun, of much less than 10,000FC. Cut in half by the window glass and screen. Cut in half again *for every foot away from the window*. At 5 feet from your south window you are giving it *100FC or less* by my fairly generous estimate of what your south window actually lets in. In St Louis, I can keep phals *in* a south window with no damage, just far enough from the pane for a shade to slide down. Start moving it closer to the window. The first day move it to about 2 feet from the window. Leave it there a day or two, feeling the leaves where the sun falls on them (if it does). If they are hot, it's too much light, move at least 6" further away. If barely warm or cool, move closer. Repeat above, moving it 6" closer to the window every couple of days til you are at the place where nearer the window = leaves are hot (or it's in the window). There's been a lot of discussion with newbies about how much light to give phals here lately. Mostly newbies wanting to argue for keeping it on an inside wall in a bookcase where it looks great, more experienced growers arguing for more light, LOTS more. Your phal will love you if you do a search for these threads. Use the search function and put in something lilike "phal + light". If you leave it where it is and it dies in 6 months, put it down to needing to learn things the hard way. Actually that's how most of us learned this lesson....See More2nd Chalkboard Wall Art Project & Chandie
Comments (19)Thank you all very much! You guys do fuel my creativity! This last time I came up w/ the idea to section the wall off using black chalk (my mom supplies the kids w/ copious amounts of chalk in lots of different colors). It made the work sooooo much faster and easier! Deedee - no worries w/ the green chest! The only reason that it is only half finished is because I haven't bought the clear glaze yet to age it. I love how bright it is but I was surprised (and a bit disappointed) when the white showed through. I knew that as as soon as I put a brown glaze on it would not be right so I am mixing a custom glaze in deep green to age it w/. Mtnrdredux - I confess to having an entire Irish Gang and the wearing O' the Kilt is a proudly held tradition by the men. Peony4 - That's funny about hiding the chalk from the kids & your dinner party! I had a terrible time trying to get my kids to stop writing on the walls. Finally I resorted to making them begin scrubbing the walls themselves when I caught them. One day I found DS2 writing on a freshly painted white wall w/ orange marker. I promptly got out the bucket and scrub brush and gave to him. Before I even had a chance to get back to my desk he declared "I'm done!". I grabbed the marker and saw that it was a washable marker. In a fury I grabbed a black industrial sharpie and scribbled on the wall and yelled "Now scrub this!". As soon as I came to my senses we all had a great laugh and it's now a favorite family story to recount "Remember the time mom flipped and wrote all over the walls?!". After that I decided to out think them and did the blackboard wall for them and said 'Have at it!'. I can only imagine what will end up on it during the teenaged yrs. One of the things that I like to do is have the kids draw on it for the Thanksgiving dinner that we host. I love to see what they come up w/. The first year was Pilgrims, Indians, turkeys, spaceships and lasers. Lots of things on fire. It's always quite the conversation starter every year. kswl - I'm telling you - I must have looked like quite a sight running down the street to my van w/ that chandelier in my hands dropping crystals as I went shouting "I'll be right back! I promise!" over my shoulder. I left my kids standing in their yard to let them know I was serious about coming back. I erased my Christmas art yesterday morning to do this. It does tend to hang around for awhile!!!!!...See MoreLayout advice-Where to put a 2nd sink?
Comments (16)The Mr. prefers windows on both north and east sides, but isn't sure how that could work... We both like no uppers as much as possible. We could do a secretary desk, but I need a place for home office materials. I don't feel comfortable using the den/classroom/ guest room as guests will be staying in that space and as much as I trust our guests -I wouldn't want to leave our personal documents there. So the desk space could surely be removed. I don't like the countertop running into the cabinets in the dead corner, not a fan, it feels awkward to me. So no fridge in the corner...But I'm open to moving it, though it would only leave the desk space aND I'm not thinking that's a good option. And thank you for sharing your parents' junk! Lol! They've got nothing on us! We once had 4 junk drawers! I would greatly prefer to have an organized home office space. The thing there has been that the hubs works from home, this using the home office. But it'snot a home office, it's a work office in our home. So we need space for his work office AND our home office. The mudroom area in the house is a hallway and I'd MUCH prefer an actual ROOM where I could put the home office space, we have that on the list to discuss with the designer. So the desk is a temporary fix...a backup. Here is the broader layout. Not exactly to scale, and things are in flux still...need to straighten so of these corners out. The kitchen is off the screened porch, adjacent to the dining and living room. We have a very large dining table, that will be turned to extend for gatherings. The stairs are not at all acurate, other than start and finish points. There are stacked stairs from basement to 2nd story. Thinking on switching the sink/cook top. .. Appreciate the photo links! We both liked the kitchen with slate? floor and 5 chairs at the island. I don't care for the upper on the far side though. Is that neseccary to ballance the look? Hmmm... Really appreciate all the thoughts!...See MoreAnyone Disappointed in The Meal They Had on Thanksgiving?
Comments (34)For Thanksgiving we hosted my sister, my brother, his wife and their son. I was disappointed that their daughter was unable to attend, but she was with her long-term boyfriend and his family, so it's understandable. My nephew brought his PS4 and a newly released game named "Fallout 4", which my niece spent the last year or so working on, so she was there in spirit at least. The meal itself was mostly great. The turkey was the best I have ever made, the mushroom gravy was outstanding, the sausage stuffing brought back memories of childhood Thanksgiving since it was our mother's recipe. The minor disappointments in the meal were the broccoli/cauliflower casserole which was slightly dried out and slightly under-cooked (I don't think anyone else noticed), the mashed potatoes (with sweet potatoes and yukon gold potatoes) was ok, but was missing something. The best part was that my brother's family was able to arrive on Wednesday afternoon, and stay until Friday evening, so it was a great, low-key, couple of days of family fun....See MoreElizabeth
