Front Entry Doors (French, 5068 or 6068?)
Comments (4)Hi abdrury--I just went and measured mine for you--we have 5680 arched entry doors (5'6" wide, 8' tall). I measured 5'6" frame to frame & 33" from the door frame to the edge of the adjacent door. With the door open, there is 29" of clearance space in the opening between the edge of the door (not the door frame) that swings open and the edge of the door that is staying stationary (it opens, it's just locked into place). You lose precious inches when you take into account the space the actual swing door takes up from the frame & how the semi-stationary door has a lip that acts as a stop for the primary swing door. There is plenty of room to move through our primary swing door. With my doors being 5'6" wide total frame to frame and only having 29" actual clearance with the door on the hinges, I would bet the 31" opening you're being told is frame to frame and does not take into account the space the door and lip take up (kind of like on blueprints when the dimensions shown aren't actual room sizes, but from middle of the stud to middle of stud--you lose 5" in those dimensions (2" for each stud + 1/2" sheetrock on each wall). I lost 4" taking this into account, so your 31" may quickly become 27" of actual clearance. Can you go see these doors in person? If so, I would take my tape measure down there and see for myself. Have someone hold the doors up for you and open the swing door & walk through. How does it feel to you--cramped or spacious? If you can't see them in person, I would order the 6068 doors to be safe. Hope this helps!...See More2 windows and double french doors vs 4 panel sliding doors
Comments (41)We built in 2021 and ended up with 5 multi-sliding doors from Euro-wall. We needed impact/hurricane rated doors. All of ours are 10 ft high to fit our 12 ft ceilings. Our largest is 6-panels and 18 ft wide. We also have 4-panels that are 12 ft wide and 2-panel that are 6 ft wide. Very happy with them, except one is missing weather stripping and we have been waiting forever for the window/door dealer to send their warranty crew out to make the repair....See MoreLarge 2-panel patio door/french door options for a wide 130" span?
Comments (5)Thanks for the suggestions! For posterity: Eurowall has a max-panel width of 96" or a whopping 8' per panel (although there's some weight limitations that might make this not work for 2 panel applications). It looks like the 2 panel depth is < 5". Arcadia has a lift-slide door (tsx6000) allowing up to 6 ft per panel (covers 12' total w/ 2 panel) and can work with ~5" exterior walls. Weiland looks like they got bought by Andersen. Andersen has a max of 108 for a 2 panel with their e-series gliding door. So they're out for this width. Fleetwood supports 76" panel width (6.3') with their 3 series sliders and looks like it'll fit with "standard" exterior walls. Comments (15)Timber plank doors are nothing new, nor is making them work really difficult to understand, it is just a lot of work. If you look at the oldest timber plank doors they would strap two or three pieces of steel to the door and use rivets to keep the door from cupping and to limit the movement. Today, if you are using a species with a lot of wood movement, then you typically drill it and use all thread plus epoxy to stop wood movement. Teak and Mahogany solid plank doors are not uncommon and make fine doors. White Oak is also fairly common but is going to require some know-how. If this is what you really want, then yes... it can be done. However, this is not a DIY friendly project. If you want to do this for the pride of crafting your own timber door then I would plan on making three or four doors to get one right even if you research it extensively before you start. If you are doing it to save money, you are better off getting a second job as it will take far less time. I don't see wood look vinyl plank working either. ETA: If you just want the look then take a couple of sheets of marine grade plywood, cut the 2x2's into strips (1/8" to 1/4" thick) and glue them to the plywood. Use a full 2x2 on each side....See MoreUser
