Comments (24)We were in one of the harder hit areas in last week's storm, so our Thanksgiving was snowy and without power or phone at our house, but happily my inlaws' power was restored part way through the morning. We had trees down on power lines and in the road, and even one power pole broken by a tree further down the road. From Thanksgiving 2014 Here is the way the dogwood outside the kitchen window looked at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. From Thanksgiving 2014 And here it is Thanksgiving morning, bent down to perhaps 4'. Happily the branches weren't much damaged when I released them, though between this storm and the one at Halloween two years ago, this tree is rather misshapen by now. From Thanksgiving 2014 The lilacs looked fairly similar, but had a lot of broken branches as well. From Thanksgiving 2014 Despite the problems caused by the weight of the snow, there were spots of beauty as well. The red maples looked like some type of unusual weeping tree From Thanksgiving 2014 and the sunlight creeping onto the trees along the riverbank was lovely. Comments (38)Took these today. It's been mild so far, but somehow I am guessing that things will be very different in a month or two...... The little red mums come back year after year, but the daffodils sprouting surprised me. The large-pad prickly pear cactus is loaded with fruit now. The pads are 10 inches long and the fruits are about 5. There are two photos of my yellow Knockout rose, still with a few flowers and one shows the hips. The foliage of the oak-leaf hydrangea is always a great color in fall. The last one is a mum that I've had for years. It blooms early, thrives on neglect, and best of all has a very large flower for a hardy mum, about 4-5 inches in diameter. Not shown are my camellia Snow Flurry (but posted in another post here) and the lavender, still going string, and a few flowers on my ice plants (delosperma)....See MoreShow Us Your Landscape/Gardens - A Photo Thread - Jan & Feb 2017
Comments (55)Well, I finished the rose pruning today and removed vast quantities of deadwood; enough so I could unravel most of the healthy canes and hoist them onto the shepherd's hooks. I did have to cut out some green stuff as well. This was the rose pathway on January 8, 2017. I only shoveled as far as the rose blockage. After the snow melted I was able to shove the roses up a bit so I could sidle past, but I got bitten each time. That's sweet Autumn clematis on the shelves to the right. That doesn't bite. And this is what is left today. I won't describe the state of my favorite work shirt that took the brunt of the thorny resistance (the hat and sunglasses and gloves protected most of me). I also cut back the sweet Autumn clematis that's growing on the fence and the storage shelves. The real test will be whether the roses bloom around the Fourth of July as usual. I also need to figure out how to maintain the roses so they don't get this tangled up again. Claire...See MoreShow Us Your Gardens - A photo Thread - September 2017
Comments (36)I have two, and they sometimes die back a bit in winter, but that is most likely due to the voles which are particularly bad in this bed. They should be rock hardy for you. The Ogons are 3 & 4 years old, started from rooted cuttings. The white flowers are early (before the foliage has mostly unfolded) and nice, but not super long lasting. To my eye, the foliage is the main attraction and really sings all season, delicate and bright yellow-green, transitioning to orange tones in fall. Mine is in full sun, and it may be less yellow in less sun. There is a much older one in a garden a couple towns over that has foliage interest, and that one is in morning sun but is shaded by the house by midafternoon. It stays more yellow than the green plants and it's a beautiful fountain of fine-textured foliage all season. I think it's probably 6' or 7' high. I don't think this is a plant that wants a lot of pruning....See Moreclaireplymouth z6b coastal MA
