Comments (27)These three photos don't look like much, but they were a long time coming. This spring I planted morning glories and moon flowers by this trellis at the back of the house and they have been struggling with the lack of sufficient sunlight. This is one of several garden spots that I am transitioning to homes for shade plants. Next year I shall plant my morning glories next to a newly installed trellis along a fence where they will receive sun all day long, and plant an arctic beauty kiwi vine in this spot which has the sun's rays only until noon. Despite the solar deficiency, this heavenly blue MG managed to produce one flower. The non-heart-shaped leaves on the left belong to the moon vine which shows no promise of buds or flowers this year. These leaves are fuzzy and I am drawn to pet them every time I walk by! Again, these flowers are nothing remarkable, but pansies have always grown well in this brook side garden, back when it was a sunnier location, so I planted these (from seed) without thinking it through. It took them all summer to bloom, but better late than never! And, finally, one of the shade plants I did actually plant this year in an appropriate spot is finally blooming and promises to produce many more blooms, on this and other stems. I ordered two of these plants this spring and they have grown well. I've always admired toad lilies, and now I have some!...See MoreShow Us Your Gardens - A photo Thread - October 2017

Comments (11)Yesterday I wasn't able to get photos to load, but here is our first snow of the year. It was supposed to be just rain, but we got both more precipitation than expected and colder temperatures, so some of it came down as snow late afternoon. It made a messy commute since it wasn't predicted. Like a couple of others, my Iberis/perennial candytuft is still blooming, even after a couple of nights in the lower 20's and the heavy, wet snow. Magnolia 'Leonard Messel' is a three season plant in my garden, with spring flowers, fall color, and huge silver buds on gray branches all winter. Since it's in a perennial bed with lots of more interesting flowers and foliage during late spring and summer, it is just part of the background in warm weather. Here it is last week before the high winds stripped it of foliage. Prior to this rich chestnut color, it was a beautiful clear yellow for a couple of weeks when nothing but Fothergilla, dogwood, beech, and oak still had foliage color....See MoreShow Us Your Landscape/Gardens - A Photo Thread - Jan & Feb 2018
Comments (57)Thanks Babs. I sometimes see a few scales even now, and I just pick them off with a Q-tip with a little alcohol. But when it's outdoors, when it's warm, I actually really blast the whole tree with the garden hose. I go all over, under, around etc. with quite a strong spray of water. I hold each leaf and make sure it's clean. Really not that hard to do, and only once is fine. It really helps to remove debris, scales etc. The plant seems to enjoy it!...See Moretimbz6
