Hardy chrysanthemums

I have been growing hardy chrysanthemums for years and have notice over the last 5 years, disease is more of a problem. I bought a hardy mum last year to use as part of my fall decorations. Last spring I planted it in my garden in a place away from other mums. It did great - growing to twice it's size. After it began blooming, I noticed the bottom leaves starting to turn brown and "crispy." Within 2 weeks the blooms were still there, but the entire green part of the plant was brown. I cut everything to the ground and destroyed it. Now I have plants popping up all around the original base. These look green and healthy now. Is there something I can do to prevent these plants from having the same disease problem as the original plant? What can I do to prevent this disease in my other mums - it's becoming more of a problem in plants I have had for years.
