They say you never read the same book twice because you are different.

I saw Father of the Bride with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor years ago when it came out. My father's mother and Spencer's mother had been friends when their sons were babies and played on the floor as the women would visit. The year we were planning our daughter's wedding, I discovered it being played on TV. How meaningful I found it! This version is my favorite because Spenser all grown up is so like my dad in the years that I knew him.

I just watched "Psycho" on TCM a few weeks ago and hadn't seen it since I was a kid. I found that the shower scene was not nearly as terrifying as it used to be. But in general I think it held up as a fine movie. I remember trying to re-read "The Stand" by Stephen King. I had read it as a teen and thought it was the best book ever. As an adult, I thought the writing was terrible and couldn't get through it.

Kurt Russel starred in "Escape from New York" in 1981 (had to look up the date). It was entertaining enough, as a look at a dystopian near-future, with Kurt playing the anti-hero, rough and ready, more worthy than the government officials, etc. We watched it again a few years ago. The story line and most of the visuals held up okay. But there was one scene in which Kurt calls for his "mobile phone" ... and it's this huge device! picture a car tire cut in half, with a couple of antennas on it! Kurt uses both hands, straining to hold it to his ear and starts talking! ... whatever he said was completely drowned out by our millennial daughter, rolling on the floor laughing. Pretty funny, but that scene didn't evoke laughter back in the 80's.

We used to have Mork & Mindy night at my house, everyone gathered around my 13" TV. We've tried just watching famous exerpts and didn't crack a smile. The same is true of old music that bothers me now when I used to be enthralled by it. ie: Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds or Puff The Magic Dragon (guess I'm no longer rebelling)

There were movies and shows I'd see when I was younger and would enjoy them but enjoyed them more when I was older because I got the jokes or references.

I was always afraid to watch Beetlejuice as a kid. I don't like scary movies and thought this was one of them. I'd watch the cartoon though. I did eventually see the movie, and I bought the cartoon box set a few years ago. Halfway into the first episode I thought how was I allowed to watch this? lol When I think about the story line of the cartoon and movie I'd rather not watch it anymore. So I sold the box set I bought.

Even certain tv shows affect me differently today. I used to watch a show called Deadly Women. I just thought it was interesting and was curious how people got to that point and such. Now I can't watch it. It just reminds me of how evil people can be and it's upsetting. For some reason hearing about women killing is so much more terrifying.

Every so often, we see something again. Philadelphia with Tom Hanks holds up really well. Carnal Knowledge with Jack Nicholson and Candice Bergen just didn't hold up at all. Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon always hold hold thru the test of time.

For me it is Home Alone. I saw it when I was younger and didn't care for it at all. I think it was probably because of the neighbor man who was estranged from his son, even though that was a bit of a sub-plot. I was also estranged from my father at the time. Years later I bought it when DD was young and thought it was a very fun and touching movie. I look forward to watching it each year at Christmastime.
