Thanks. I've used spinosad. I don't actually put it in the beds, but spread it around the garden. I've begun a more intense war on them in the yard hoping to reduce the population - which it has - in the yard - but hasn't really helped in the garden. I'm sure you can imagine how horrible it is to weed, or harvest and bring up a handful of fire ants!!!!

Sonni, depending on where the fire ants are I treat the area. With the recent weather that we had I found some nests on the place where I put the tomatoes. Every nest got a boiling water treatment till they were all gone. Other area that had plantings got the diatomaceous earth treatment. I went all around the areas with a stick and looked for nests under the mulch. It is all clean now.

Our chickens, especially the Key West chickens, love to dig up the fire ant hills and eat up all the white baby ants. They do it every time they find a hill and the ants get mad and leave. We have almost 4 acres which was covered with fire ants before we moved in with chickens. Now its rare that I have fire ants. Every now and again I find some that set up housekeeping in the garden and I call the chickens over and they dig it all up. They aren't all that crazy about eating the adult ants but once they find out about those 'tasty' (to them) little white larvae in the ant holes they will remember and dig them up and the adults will move shop. Guineas also do a great job of removing ants.

Used coffee grounds from Starbucks. If the nests are outside the growing area and are coming in, surround the garden with a good amount of grounds. They will not cross the line. Works around the house too. If they are in the beds, make mud out of it and cover the growing area. They will not tunnel up through the mud, and the nests will die out for lack of food.
