How often to water tomato plants?

Hi, I was wondering how often do I need to water my tomato plants once or twice a day? We're suppose to be in the low to mid 80's for the next 7 days...I don't want to over water and water down the flavor of the tomatoes but yet I don't want to under water and have the buds or small fruits drop either.

I have a Blueberry cherry tomato plant...

Hi Nancy

Your blueberry tomato plant looks healthy, it is one hardy variety. Since you have it in the ground, it does not need to water that often. I go with my watering method most times, water when the top is dry. In a weather like we are having now, sometimes is once a day and other times once every other day. It also depends on the location and sun exposure.

If you did not grow the blueberry tomato before, you have to be diligent about the picking, under ripe is no good and over ripe is not good either. Picked at the right time it makes for an interesting variety and will take the cold weather better than other varieties.

Thanks Silvia, appreciate your great advise and input...it is my first time growing this variety and I have read it is one I have to learn how to pick properly. It was too pretty not to try growing so we'll see how I do with it...it does.

It gets full sun from around 8:30 am to about 2 pm then its in the shade.

I'm guessing I need to pick mine when its almost black, firm but has some give when squeezed lightly...I think it says it turns red only when grown mostly in the shade...

I can't offer advice on potted tomatoes but I have 2 gardens with tomatoes. The one garden is on a timer in a raised bed. It gets watered 3 times a day. Twice in the morning and once in the afternoon. The other garden I have at home I water when I wake up (usually around 5:30am) Both seem to be producing a large number of tomatoes. In the beds with automatic watering I am looking at some tomatoes topping 1 LB.

Well, I'll chime in with a straight face, MOL..... my 'maters are all in pots, and need water at least twice a day, I mix up some MG in a bucket and pour some into each bucket I have next to each plant, I keep that water-bucket there so all I have to do is dip out some water and not drag the hose all over the yard.. so essentially I am giving each 'mater some liquid fertilizer each time I water...I won't even speculate at what strength but the water is blue, from the MG... most of my 'maters are getting pretty big, they are from last year's planting Tom brought me.... but they are still setting fruit so I keep them going even tho' they are pot-bound now.....I speculate that the only thing that keeps them going is the liquid fert., by now, because any other nutrient in the potting-mix has been long-gone..... works for me.... sally

Oh yes, it is red clay. Rock hard, concrete-like red clay to be exact. When I first started the garden 3 years ago, I tilled down about 12 inches into the clay (took several days)and added some pine bark fines (soil conditioner) and a lot of compost to try and fluff up the soil some. But when you consider in planting deep, there was only a couple of inches of "soft soil" under the plants. Believe me when I way it sounds easier than it was. But it was worth it. Now the worms have taken over and helped to aerate the soil and it is not too bad now. One good thing about clay though is that it holds water and nutrients very well. You have to keep a good layer of mulch to keep the top layer from crusting though. On the reverse, compaction can be a big problem, which is why my planting beds are mounded so that I don't walk in them. Maybe one year I can talk the wife into letting me make some good raised beds. jj

I don't have spider plants, but those who do pretty would want to know what kind of soil you use before giving you advice. That's because many folks around here use growing media made of large particles that drain very quickly and stay aerated even right after watering, which calls for very different watering habits than the more common fine grained peat based potting soil. Hopefully this bump will attract more attention.

Nancy, you are welcome. I always grow my tomatoes in the same spot, almost the same sun like yours. It did turn red in the sun, they do look pretty in a salad or salsa.

I picked them when showing some red in the bottom and ate them before they were soft, you will find out the best time for your taste. You will like the hardiness and productivity of this variety.
