Inset Cabinets+Appliances+Toe Kick=Help, Please!!!
Comments (3)Making your inset base cabinets 1"-1 1/2" deeper than standard depth will help a great deal with some of your integration issues. You will also want to make the uppers deeper than the standard 12" because a plate will not fit into an inset upper than is only 12" deep. Choosing deepr than normal cabinetry with inset should be "standard" with cabinet makers, but it often is a custom upcharge. Check with your cabinet maker about this before deciding to return any of your purchases---and encountering the restocking fees that will be levied....See MoreInjury prone toes and furniture style toe kicks
Comments (8)Vsalz - your husband's opinion is enough for me. I'm sorry he had to be my guinea pig. : ) It's good to be able to x something of the list of possibilities. windycitylindy - i think you are just in the club. The toe breaking club. In our house the deadliest toe breaker is the center foot/leg on a three-seater couch. deb52899 - I do admire the furniture style moldings. They would be better for the toes, but I am afraid of messing with ergonomics and my back but maybe on an island with more of a counter overhang? It's looks like maybe vsalz's kitchen has that (which I see on further reading is an actual movable piece of furniture)....See MoreKitchen Reveal Scherr's RTA
Comments (80)We had Scherr's paint them. I got Scherr's to give me couple of quotes, unpainted, primed only and fully painted. It just wasn't that much more to have them painted in the big scheme of things. I am glad we did. I've painted primed cabinets before. I got a much better finish. One thing that you need to know is they use a catalyzed varnish finish. While it's color matched, it has a slightly different cast due to the way the light hits it. It is much sturdier than basic paint. So, be sure to get any directly adjacent trim painted by them, too. I had a piece of trim a the top that was hand painted. It was noticeable if you looked at it really closely. The rest of my trim was separated by drywall and you didn't notice the difference with the drywall separation. The only way you would get an exact match is to use the same paint product on both. Small, but noticeable if you really look. It was a really good experience. We enjoyed putting them together....See MoreToe-kicks in a closet?
Comments (10)On the short wall there is a 30" wide bank of drawers with a counter. I probably won't stand at that counter other than when using the drawers or accessing the cabinets above but I am inclined to have a toe-kick there. Maybe I'll end up folding clothes on the counter or something. The long walls do not have drawers, cabinets or counters. On those walls, is there any good reason to have toe-kicks vs flush base in the absence of counters? That's my question, I know there is no functional need for toe-kicks there, but is there some other non-functional reason for one vs the other? The vast majority of closets have a flush base. Why? Khloe's toe-kicks are at a counter where you must have them. Can't tell in that photo if she has them on the cabinets against the wall. I'm curious. Lyfia - I won't need toe-kicks when looking at or accessing things in my closet because my closets are 19" deep so hangers will slightly protrude. There are shelves too, but you never get so close to shelves that your face is against them, that's when you need toe-kicks. At a counter your body is right up against the cabinet so you need room for your toes, that doesn't happen with wall shelves or hangers. I previously talked to the builder about creating a floating look by deeply recessing the toe-kicks rather than painting them black as that blog suggested and I feel myself starting to lean that way....See Morepalimpsest
