If you take cuttings from a juniper will that cutting alsobe same sex?

I want to try to propagate juniperus chinensis var sargentii from cuttings. Will it be same sex as original plant? Also will that juniper reliably produce cones?

Yes to your 1st question. Maybe to your next question. Cone (juniper berry) production quantity would be both cultural and genetic.

Thanks. Do you know if var. sargentii is a type of juniper that usually produces those berries? And what cultural factors influence cone production?

Ok, whatever. I'm still waiting for somebody to stop by my house with a pair of snips, lol. I'd pretty much let anybody go to town on anything large enough to block the path. Here are some things that need thinning: Lonicera sempervires 'Sulphurea' Jasminum multiflora Thunbergias alata and grandiflora Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Yellow Star' and 'Variegata' T. asiaticum and T.a. 'Variegata' Passiflora caerulea, incarnata and 'Lavender Lady' Bignoia capreolata 'Miss Jeckyll'(maybe a mislabeled 'Mosaic', though) Salvia uliginosa Malvaviscus arboreus Hibiscus syriacus, pink Odontonema strictum Piper auritum Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Capatiola', 'Cooperii', 'Red Hot', and some unnamed, colors and white. Hibiscus acetocella Meyer's Lemon Buddleja alternifolia Ruellia brittonia, pink and blue. You can pull as many of these out as you can carry. Crocosmia crocomifolia, ditto. Brugmansia suavolens, bring the BIG loppers, lol. Quisqualis indica................. Oh, yeah. A friend had me cut back her massive plumerias yesterday and gave me most of the cuttings. I've been handing them out like candy. Really, come get 'em, lol.... I made some offers for postage. One person sent their's, no word from one, one didn't understand how to use PayPal. Sigh. I guess I'll have two boxes of cuttings to stick unless I just toss them.

Hey Claire and Jeff...I think I might just become a Lantidiot myself. We were getting rid of some annual lantana a week ago. I popped them out of the pots and into our big compost barrels to be thrown into our huge compost pile. Three days later they had not been emptied yet to the big pile. There were sitting in a big black barrel in scorching 90 degree weather with no water and they looked exactly the same as when I had unpotted them. Growing conifers from cuttings: any advice?

I wrote this recently, it's about grafting. Everything would be done in exactly the same manner except you can root beyond Winter time with the best results starting in Mid-May-June as pretty much throughout the summer ending at the end of July where your results will be not as good. Mid-May to Mid June is probably the best window outside of winter. You'll take cuttings with a heel of hardwood. On Cuttings 4-6" you'll want a heel of 1". Photos Depicting a Graft Otherwise, you can use large tupperware bins with the top tall and place them in mostly shade or morning sun only, or under a tree that casts dappled shade all day. You'll keep the lids held in place with rocks or bricks and keep it partially open/just tilted to the side exposing a few inch opening. You can expect rooting anywhere between 6 to 8 weeks (same as a graft). Problem with this method is you can cook them on any given hot day. On those days you'd be best off to mist them 5-6 times or more a day and keep them in shade. Of course I'm using a greenhouse which takes all the guessing out of it. I'm just trying to help. And there's certainly nothing wrong and even a great idea to make an outdoor bed and tent it. Right up against a garage or your home. Or build some / one (coldframes). It's all the same. Placement is key! Too hot a day, throw a shade cloth over it...etc- I'm using Clonex / Clonex Red is also available. Follow a fungicide schedule as well. Dax

'Bill, I guess we are both beginners in propagating conifers. My god I didn't know it was this hard to grow conifers...' We all have to start somewhere. Don't give up. I think the methods Dave O. gave to us really simplifies things. Next time, I'm going to do mine that way. It will cut down on a lot of the work. This time, I spent a lot of time checking temperatures and that's because I didn't have a thermostat on my mat, so I used a timer and had to continually check and change the on/off cycles to coincide with what ambient temps were doing. The colder it got outside, the more heat it took to keep 70d bottom heat (remember I'm zone 3 brrr) :) . Next year I definitely will have a thermostat. I also spent time buying/configuring lighting, next year, I won't have to fool with that. Built myself an insulated rooting chamber, should work just fine 'as is' next year. And the reading. I must've read certain articles 10x before it totally sunk in, then you have to sort through all the contradictory and incorrect information found on the internet. So yeah, first time around is always the hardest. Keep us posted on what you do next time, I find it interesting. I still don't know how my stuff will turn out but I'll keep posting on my "Rooting Tsuga Canadensis" thread as things develop. Good Luck! :-) Hey Dave! in nature.. there is no one to take cuttings of a plant.. so i would presume that all plants must seed to procreate [and conifers do not multiply by runners/rhizomes or crown multiplication] ... or else said plant would be on top of the dust bin of evolution ...

if you read close.. smiv said QUANTITY would be variable ...

the first variable would be how many years to maturity ... which can be long in many conifers ...

your second issue with cuttings.. without professional equipment .. imo.. would be how long it takes for your cuttings to mature ... and that would be cultural things ...

the few cuttings i rooted ... took a very long time.. to turn into anything ... but to be honest.. i lost interest ... i wouldnt be surprised.. if i tracked them down ... it may have been a decade to get them to common sale size .... and if it took that long for size... i would imagine cone or seed production would be way behind also ..

since you are taking a piece of a plant and rooting it ... making a clone ... how could it magically change its genetic structure to change sex??? .. seems far fetched to me .... but then this is about where i lose interest in genetics .... and one reason i never got too deep into hosta hybridization ... but that isnt really what this question is about .... [and i note.. there is nothing in this question about using hardcore chemicals in this process .... . wherein you might change such]

If you collect cuttings from a male Juniper, it will not produce seed cones. Both male and female Junipers are needed to produce viable seed cones (on the female).

I have planted a group of 4 J. flaccida several years ago. Hoping I will have at least one of each sex to produce viable seed cones. The wait continues. Good luck with your efforts.

That's what I'm trying to do to. I speculate I will be buying my first home in about 10 years so before that I'll plant about 4 var sargentii juniperus at my current house and see which ones produce cones. Then Ill transplant them to my new property in 10 years. If they can in fact be transplanted after 10 years..
