blood meal
Comments (15)Well heck, if you want just pure nitrogen then sprinkle your household ammonia over your compost....and if you want that to effect breakdown of material, add to the ammonia some coca cola...pure sugar...which entices the bacteria to go to work. Blood meal --as nitrogenous as it is, is not a good addition ot your compost pile---its a big waste of money. The lawn fertilizer---no..its not organic...but then, what is organic about wanting to break down the compost pile faster. There are products on the shelf designed specifically to speed up the breakdown of a compost pile. Such prodcuts have been around for years....and they are not a big seller. Why? Because the compost pile will break down what is added to it in its good time. There is usually no need to try to speed things up. Its a waster of time and energy. Turning it, and dampening it down and giving it material designed to heat the pile up is all that is required....See MoreOT-want ot see pics of ornamental grasses?
Comments (10)PV--I grew them all from very small plugs. Most of them I got when Santa Rosa gardens when they had their clearance sell. Actually I think it's going on right now. They were like $2 a plug. These have been growing for 3-5 (or more) years now. The plugs are very tiny, but they will grow if you take care of them. I usually leave them pots for a year or so before I plant them out. I have grown the following from seed (they are still in the very small plug stage right now)--- festuca- elijah blue deschampsia- wavy hair elymus magellanicus-blue wheat grass stipa tenuissima- mexican feather grass I've heard the miscanthus varieties probably won't come true to seed. Comments (12)Dr. Manners, went back and did more reading on the biosynthesis of anthocyanins, and you are indeed correct. Although the components that produce the end product - anthocyanin are of course transported to the site (pulp and peel for citrus), they are "assembled" for lack of a better word, on site in the vacuoles of the cell where the pigment is displayed. Actually, (shockingly?), Wikipedia has a very nice synopsis of the biosynthesis of anthocyanin, and the entry is well-referenced. Now, that all being said, my biochemistry is OLD (can we say 1980?), so pretty rusty, but yes, you're quite correct - happens in the peel and pulp, and the anthocyanin can travel to the pulp from the peel, even after picking. And since there are several enzymes responsible for the creation of anthocyanin, there can be any number of genetic or environmental factors which can affect anthocyanin synthesis. So, some years you may get very pigmented oranges, and other years, not so much, even from a tree with good anthocyanin "genes". What I found very interesting as an aside, is that pretty reddish tint you see in a rose's new growth is caused by juvenile anthocyanin. I wonder where it goes though, after the leaves mature and turn green? Or does it NOT go anywhere, but is "overruled" by chlorophyll?? Travel to the red petals of the flower (red/dark pink roses have much redder new leaves). Guess that's another topic for another forum, lol!! I will always defer to your expertise, I am no biochemist for sure!! Patty S....See MoreOT: POTD : I was going to boil some water to make you a tea
Comments (8)Kasha what a sweet *reward* for posting the POTD for everyone and hoping that it will do some good to at least ONE of you each day. I had the pleasure of finally meeting Princealbert and his sweet wife Betty today. What a treat it was! One day I really want to meet so many of you, that if ever there will be a nationwide get together...I will be there. Until then...I have to start with smaller get togethers like swaps lol Caren I am glad you like them too lol Who needs tea right? lol Pat so glad you had time for tea. I was so hung up in downloading scrapbook things from a PSP group, that when princealbert called...I had to tell him that I am still not dressed roflmao Yes it is one of the new hibiscus' I bought in spring from a co op. they finally started growing a while ago and have shown their beauty to me a few times. Wait until you see that black dragon photo!! Eloise most of these hibiscus' have very thick roundish leaves. Not really lots of them on most lol. Ingrid what a joy it was to hear from you again. Sorry that it is so cold there. But just remember what beautiful temps you are coming back home to :-) I would not worry about your angel. It always works out. Even when at first you get a shock...like I did twice after coming back from Florida...but everything is fixable!! One way or another. Tim do I smell a possible trade I can share with you after all? You know I am desperately looking for something to give back to you for all the wonderful plants you shared and sharing with me. Lucy...See MoreUser
