Gas range decision 30' 6years old DCS or new Bertazzoni?
Comments (7)>>>"But from what I can find, seem that you either get a lemon or a good one , but all thread seem to be older..."I'm not understanding this comment. Did you mean: (1) that all the NXR threads are older; or (2) all the theads about NXR lemons are older; or (3) that there is a high probability of getting a lemon (as with Viking in some recent years)? If #1 was what you meant, there must be something wrong with the GW search engine because there are two active and long-running NXR threads here with postings as recent as last weekend. If # 2 was what you meant, I'm guessing you are referring to the two older postings -- in longer threads --- from NX buyers who had problems with flaking oven enamel. A third person posted a youtube video. That's pretty much it. A couple of NXR users (StacyNeil and DirtyBloomers) have had an oven glow-bar ignitor wear out, but that is an inexpensive, readily available, user-installable part. Apparently, the oven circuits on earlier models were trying too hard to maintain a perfectly even oven temp and so were cycling on so frequently that they could wear out the glow-bar ignitor. Stacy reported that there is a fix for that on older models and the models since 2011 (DRGB models) do not cycle as frequently. This allows a bit more latitude on heating. Right now, the oven in my 2012 NXR DRGB3001 seems to allow a +/- 10 F temperature variance before activating or shutting off the burner. My previous stove, a GE dual fuel, would go as low as 40F below the set temp before kicking back on and would go as much as 20F above before cycling off. This seems to be common on many residential ranges. If the # 3 point is what was intended, that would be incorrect. Basically, the NXRs are like old-fashioned gas stoves dressed up with a "pro-style" look and supplied with the minimal updates of a convection fan for the oven, an infrared in-oven broiler, spark ignitors for the burners, and a re-ignitor circuit in case a low-flame burner blows out. There just is not much to go wrong. Any component that could fail over time is a readily available, off-the shelf part. User serviceable, if you are so inclined. To be sure, that old-fashioned simplicity can be as much a disadvantage as a benefit, depending on what you want from your stove. While some will see the lack of electronics as an advantage for durability, others may want the flexibility and features that come from integrated circuits. Multiple convection modes, for example, and oven self cleaning functions. Others may want a more polished look to their stove. The NXR is pretty basic and a plain piece of work. It is not as pretty as a Bertazonni nor, for that matter, the DCS. And this brings me back to your original question about whether to get the 6-year old DCS with a backsplash, a DCS warming drawer, and DCS range hood for $2500. I will echo Weissman's questions. Why is the seller disposing of this rig? Has it been troublesome or has the owner maybe decided to go for an even bigger kitchen remodel with larger stuff? Is this a divorce or estate sale? Has the equipment already been removed or can you check it out to be sure everything is operating to your satisfaction? Check out the burner caps and components. Make sure they are not corroded or rusting. What model is the stove? My recollection is that DCS had two 30-inch models, the 304 and 305. One had convection and (I think) self-cleaning and the other did not. The non-convection one is probably easier to work on if it needs service and probably easier to fix (as with the NXR). How big is the range hood? The rule of thumb for rangehoods is that you want them to extend three inches or so beyond the sides of your stove. IOW, it is preferable to have a 36-inch hood for a 30-inch stove. A 30-inch hood over a 30-inch stove will work but will not work as well as a wider hood because steam and etc. can flow out to the sides. How much cleaning will have to be done before you install it in your place. What size venting does it use? How deep and how tall is it? Will you have to modify or remove existing cabinets? If you already have a venthood, will the DCS hood fit with the existing installation? If you do not get this array of stuff, what do you plan for a range-hood if you get the Berta? Do you have an existing range hood? How much cleaning needs to be done? Who will remove the equipment from the owner's place (if it is not already removed.) How will you get the equipment moved and installed? Have you checked on parts availability? If not, I suggest you get the stove model number and see what SearsPartsDirect carries and what (if anything) is no longer available. In the area where you live, is there anybody who sells and//or services DCS appliances. I suggest calling them up an see if they will tell you anything about parts availability and the need for service on this year and model of stove. Maybe they can give you a sense of market values for the array of stuff being offered....See More33 year old has 30 children.
Comments (25)Sat down for a few & saw this. Wow! Anyone watch the video from 2009? Have to say that something needs to be done. I bet he is also on gov't assistance because he's not left with enough to survive. I wish the story said how many each woman has with him. We don't know if the women are married & where they get help from. My guess would be there are 4 women that he's regularly had in his life & he keeps going back to them. He claims to know their names & birthdays. The one said he's good about giving her milk money even though she doesn't get support. My guess; he's getting some sort of help; probably gets food vouchers. Reminds me of Cody Brown. It's in the video; "they know what they're getting into" or what ever he said about them knowing that if they get knocked up; they can get in line with the rest. Something needs to be done. The government is broke; yet I know more people that are on public assistance then when I applied in the 80's. How I did not qualify is beyond me; yet I see all these people being reckless & somehow getting it. They trade food vouchers for cigs. They have more kids. There should be some kind of law that people go on long term birth control once they enter the system so they do not pop out more kids while on it- IUD or the Essure & in his case; they should offer vasectomy. They will cry it's against their rights to deny them having more children while on public assistance. I've seen this with my own eyes. Actually know of one that has been popping out 1 a year; is now on #4; husband is laid off; last kid has some sort of disability & won't be 1 until the summer. Apparently she's applying for social security to have gov't assistance for him. They don't have health insurance through his work so she gets medicaid. Some how they got a nice sized tax return & spent it recklessly. I don't talk about our situation; cancer killed us financially. When my hub went back to work 4/2010 after being out 7 months; he was on light duty until he was physically able to haul cars again. He worked slow & was just getting back into the swing when his company lost our bread & butter; about 6 months after he went back- 10 months after treatment ended. He was dealing with a bad immune system still; had MRSA; his Lupus was flaring & he kept getting thrush. He was exhausted; my private hell was that his cancer would return in his lungs. He went back to the light duty work & in March 2011 his company lost every other account they had except 1. With 28 years in; he was forced to jump ship to a job making 50% less. People that did not have his years in; somehow cut a deal when their company went under & they slid into my hubs board; keeping their original hire date with the old company which pushed them ahead of my hub. Friends of our have lost trucks; filed bankruptcy. We've tried to get my hub out of the new job since August 2011 & it finally happened in March; then he was out of work 3 weeks. I don't know what the future will hold. His old company was forced into bankruptcy the other day; so a few of his friends that were lucky to keep their job will be laid off tomorrow. It really ticks me off that hard working people like us can't easily get help; yet people like this keep getting hand outs. Something is seriously wrong. 2009 video Father, 29, in child support court says he has 21 kids KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- On paper, he has 20 possibly 21 children. With a minimum wage job, he can't afford to support them all. What is the state to do? Desmond Hatchett, 29, told WVLT he wasn't out to set a record, though he certainly holds it in Knox County Juvenile Child Support Court. Hatchett's children range in age from newborn 11. There are at least 11 mothers; probably several more. Constitutionally, there is nothing the state can do to limit him from having more. "I had four kids in the same year. Twice." Desmond Hatchett told Volunteer TV. On Friday, his name appeared on the docket 11 times; Representing about 15 of his 21 children. "Can you keep up with it all?" WVLT asked Hatchett. "Yeah," he said. "You know all their names, and ages and birthdays?" "Yeah." Hatchett's name is pretty controversial at the old courthouse. "The children can't be supported all by Desmond, so the state of Tennessee has had to step in," Hatchett's attorney Keith Pope said. It's your tax dollars at work. WVLT spoke with one mom who has two children with Hatchett. She is supposed to get $67.50 a month. But many times, she gets a lot less than what she's owed. They all do. "It'll make it through half the month," the unidentified mom said. She told Volunteer TV, Hatchett is the father of her two sons. And she says her 4-year-old is expensive enough on his own. "He's a heavy milk drinker. And milk is not cheap," she said. "It's frustrating, but usually, when I ask he give it to me," she continued. It's due process-- the state is only allowed to take 50% of Hatchett's paycheck. That's 50% split multiple times. "You look at when they filed, how many children they have-- he has several mothers that he has two children with. And, it's tough" Pope explained. Still, Hatchett says the women knew what they were getting into. They were all aware of his large family. One said, she doesn't like it but she deals with it. "It's about the kids. Not the parents," she said. Hatchett agrees he should do what's best for the kids. "Do you intend to keep having children?" WVLT asked. "No." Hatchett replied. "You're done?" "I'm done. I'll say I'm done." "What made you say that?" "I didn't intend to have this many. It just happened," Hatchett said. Desmond Hatchett spent part of Friday afternoon jailed while a child support referee decided how to split up the $400 he brought to court. If he doesn't pay what he owes, he will go back to jail because he is on an automatic jail order. The mothers of Hatchett's children are supposed to get anywhere from $25 to $309 a month, but when his paycheck is garnished amongst them all, some women only get a $1.98 a month. Comments (25)Whenicit, yes Plain and Fancy is still there, now called Plain and Fancy Farm which is a complex with lots of tourist attractions. DH and I often eat at nearby Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant which has a smorgasbord with wonderful PA Dutch food..lol chisue makes some good points. Your parents could use the money they get for their house to buy an apartment in a retirement community and their combined SS payments could enable them to afford the monthly fee, with help from the children. We live in a 1500 sq ft villa which cost us $205,000. (The villas are 1340 sq ft, but ours has a sunroom which adds to the sq footage.) We sold our house for $232,000, so we had some money to buy new furniture, etc. The apartments cost more because all meals, laundry, etc. are included. Comments (26)Thank you both the dw suggestions make sense. The vent hood will sit above the window. Its a nice little touch to bring in light right? Yes but it won't bring in much light. I actually did the same thing but at my prep sink. (see below) And we love the idea of having windows on each side but there will be cabinets there so thats a challenge. Can you post your kitchen floor plan and are you able to make changes if needed? I ask because if all your lower cabinets are DRAWERS, you'll have a lot more storage and won't necessarily need to be always reaching up to get something. You might be able to get away with only upper cabinets along the fridge wall. Speaking of the fridge wall, it's not ideal having the fridge in the middle of the work area. Ideally it should be along the outer edge of the kitchen. my concern though is having too many windows. any thoughts on this? I love natural light so I have windows on almost every possible wall with the exception of those facing west since I live in hot Florida. the house will be facing north. not sure if thats a good or bad thing, That's a good thing since your backyard will have southern light and so will your living room. The only issue is if you're in a climate with snow, your front yard may take longer for the snow to melt. (Ask me how I know. LOL) The only negative is that the afternoon sun will stream into your main rooms since it faces west so it may impact heat and light in the later part of the day, but because you're on a corner, you absolutely do not want your bedrooms towards the street. would a 1‘ extension help for living dining and kitchen areas? the cost seems more budget friendly than to extend by 2’. the bay window to dining area is an opoption for the cost of 2.5k. knowing the cost for the extensions vs bay window, im curious to know what you would do. any thoughts on this what we should do here? I personally would not add a bay window but would absolutely increase the width of the house. Do the 2' if you're able to financially. Otherwise do the 1'. You won't regret the extra room in the house. finally, would the shape of the house not look awkward if an extension is made to the living dining and kitchen areas with the study room excluded? No it won't....See MoreEmbothrium
