Deck, or no Deck (I want a patio)
Comments (23)rosiew Amazing - this post began more than a year ago and has life again. Thanks for your suggestion. The pergola is under construction now. We did give consideration to using greenhouse shade cloth but opted to install lattice atop. Should the shade be insufficient we'll make a change. Are afraid that the adjacent trees will cause leaves, etc. to be constantly on shade cloth and can blow away. Have had to downsize the shade area because the city said 12 x 16 is too large (now 8 x 12) - even though they previously approved the footings. The most incompetent, arrogant and disgusting lot of bureaucrats anywhere. No discussion, was told a variance would not be approved, just that everyone must follow the rules. If you ever have a week I'll expound on my true feelings!...See MoreStone pavers on top of PT wood decking

Comments (0)We are redoing our backyard space by removing our deck and adding a patio using Techo-Bloc Blu 60 mm slab in Champlain Grey with a double band using Villagio paver in Onyx Black on the inside and Vale paver in Champlain Grey on the outside. We are also building a grill island that will be 6' x 3' with a 32" grill along with a double access door below the grill and an access door and drawer combo to the right (see attached sketch of similar layout) . What type of Techo-Bloc would you recommend to build the grill island and what color? We are leaning towards the Mini-Creta Architectural but are not sure if we should stay with Champlain Gray or do something contrasting. We plan to put in a granite countertop, but are also unsure what color of granite to go with. Should we do black or go with something lighter that has some of the other colors, but may be more "busy"? I have attached a photo of a patio I found that has the same paver colors/banding we plan to use (this is NOT our patio, just one I found online). If it makes a difference, the two steps from our house to the patio will be in York Onyx Black with the first step having a Blue 60 slab inlay of the Champlain Grey since it's a little wider to make it more of a landing....See MoreDeck and Patio together - A harmonious design
Comments (3)Yes you can mix the deck with the patio but IMO the deck needs to be much larger with no second set of of stairs and I think the deck is the place for the dinig area and the patio for the seating and fire pit since in a home the DR would be next to the kitchen I always think of the outdoor space just like a home. You will need a good landscape designer to pull this off and IMO yes you will need to rebuild the deck maybe make it 2 levels one for the BBQ and outdoor kitchen then the next area down the DR and then the patio I do not like fixed seating for fire pits they do not allow for movement away from the smoke. I love the 2nd pic a perfect way to handle the seating around the pit and the whole space just look so inviting....See Moregermainetoo
