doorway Q, please
Comments (4)I can't tell you if it would be a mistake; that depends on what you run into while doing the switch. Things you may discover: Plumbing and electrical in the way of widening. Framing issues (new load-bearing headers to be fitted) Material issues you've already touched on, but also that framing may be thicker stock (full 2x4, not 1.5x3.5) which adds a further consideration. Will the new doors and moulding be of comparable quality to the stuff coming out? Normally, the answer is no, so it will be up to you to source and acquire stuff to the level of authenticity that will satisfy you. 36" interior doors demand a lot of space in terms of swing and wall area. Unless there's a pressing issue, I personally would avoid widening all the openings. You don't see a lot of gumwood in my area, but that may not be as big a problem in yours. Other species of wood may match fairly well- cherry, butternut and walnut are worth a look if gumwood doesn't pan out. Casey...See MoreHelp with layout please!--Narrow kitchen with lots of doorways
Comments (18)houseful, I like the idea of turning the fridge. The doorway to the dining room is an arched type doorway with no wood trim. I can easily check out to see if I can turn it tonight. I could definitely move the door to the porch, but I'm not sure it helps me. I need to be able to seat 4 in the kitchen and I'd rather look out into the backyard instead of directly into the porch. I tried combining the 2 plans. Husband likes the idea of the booth set up with the buffet area behind it. I think the cabinet layout is better with the prep sink toward the backyard rather than in the corner, so I came up with this. Question: How much space is needed to do the booth? How big should each seat area take? I was thinking a 20" window seat so I could have 17-18" seat with a 2-3" cushion behind it. So, 20" per bench area =one being the window seat addition. Table would be 30" wide but I think there can be some overlap with the seats so maybe allocate 26" for the table space... Total for booth area 46" plus the window seat. Sound about right?...See MoreKitchen Layout Help - 5 doorways and a chimney
Comments (10)Love the pantry--I could see the window in the pic. You could have a baking pantry with a counter and small sink but I'd keep it as is, except--I hesitate to mention changing a door in an older home, but at 37" (I assume that includes trim) you could make the pantry door more narrow (salvage the trim to reinstall), and not have a conflict with cabinets. ETA since you are replacing the window, you could have casements with center divider, and the sink centered under the left side. Also in the second plan, you might have to omit the third seat because of the wide entry door, but then you get an extra cabinet on the end....See MoreHelp maximize seating in u-shaped kitchen w/ multiple doorways
Comments (5)(not a pro) I realize you didn't ask about this, but please make sure there's enough room between the refrigerator and the wall to fully open the door. You don't want to end up with this: Check the manual (install guide or owner's guide) for the model they have or are considering, for a picture like this that shows how much room is needed to fully open the doors (top image.) The goal is to open each door wide enough that the drawers can be removed for access and cleaning....See Moresuzyq53
