Loft ceiling help -- possibly beadboard?

Gretchen

I'm renovating a small 1972 ski condo. The upper floor is a loft (open on one half to the room below, bunk room on the other half). The tallest part of the ceiling on the upper floor (bunk room and loft area) is only 7 ft tall. And heavily textured (the photo below says it all).

So, I'm hoping for help -- what would you do to these ceilings? I've considered beadboard (which way would I orient the boards to maximize the sense of space?), board and batten, drywall cover, and having the ceilings scraped. What would you do???

I plan to paint everything bright white to brighten the place.

Other renovations include built in dressers and bunks, new floors...etc. But that's for another post. :)
